they do add some nice finishing touches and extra trim bits, if your into that sorta thing, but it's really not built any better or any quality difference that I have been able to tell, those 740li's were the worst cars ever, nothing but problems, always in the shop, the company quit buying bmw's because of those 2 cars, now they buy lexus's bleh
+1, there are extra goodies and nicer leather and maybe some dash leather but the plastics for the most part are the same- the only part of the 1er that is noticeably cheaper to me is the plastic textured trim below the dash trim piece- it's a much harder material- just a solid plastic, where as in the e46 it has the same soft touch as the door and upper dash trim

While this new one looks like it will be awesome and exactly what many people are looking for, I'm actually quite relieved to see some details, as it makes me think the 135i I just ordered is actually more for me.

Think it'll carry more than 300-306HP "out of the box"? Or just lighter/better suspension?

There is upgraded n54 already in new 7...
The existing N54 is already being retired..
We will have more news when LCI e92 comes out.
SOme speculate N55 is the engine of choice now, due to emissions.
Some say new N54 revision is on the way with 330-350hp.
Some say Turbo (or twin or quad) 4 banger is the engine of choice for next generation..

I think they need to decide where this car is gonna sit on the BMW totem pole. Would they or would they not allow it to be "better" than the perennial M3, that is the question. As of right now, you take the current 135i, add the BMW performance suspension(got a great review recently), the power kit, lsd, alter the fenders to allow bigger rubber and/or wheels, replace the sunroof with a fixed carbon fiber roof, lose 100 pounds, add $7-8k to the pricetag, and you have, IMO, a world beater, particularly for the price point.
Point being, it wouldn't take much to make the existing coupe outstanding.

For all that forgot: The //M is rumored to weigh around 2900lb. Hellooooo! I'm positive the Supersport would come over 3000 though.

The last time I looked (it has been a couple months now) the engine in the 7 had the same HP/torque specs as the N54 with the Power Kit - that led me to think it was why they came out with the Power kit for the existing N54 applications.

Have Fun,
Rick

great thread but that first pic of that wide body rear plastic riveted on is some home made looking crap....

if you want a m1 just buy the m3 motor and trans and drop it in the 1er... Or you can buy a v10 1er from Hartge....

Since no body pieces have been made it is possible that they took the existing 1er body and were experimenting with bigger rear setups, ie, suspension, tires, wheels, etc...

The bolted on flare is simply to make it street legal.

Im personally waiting for somebody to rip the rear seats out of the car and midmount a V10 behind the driver, and then turbocharge it.

To take that much weight out of a car is an expensive proposition.

Making a M version of the 135i would be easy and fairly cheap for BMW. All they need is to un-do the handicaps they engineered into the 135i. Install wider wheels and tires (especially up front), make the optional performance suspension stock, and slightly larger turbos so torque doesn't drop off like a rock at 5500 rpms.

They'll also need to upgrade the seats and stereo to match the quality of the M3. The stereo in our '06 325i sounds better than my 135i's system.. and that's with the $800 upgrade and HD radio. Oh, lets not forget the rear M limited slip differential.

Should call it The M coupe since they are no longer making one.

Well, if they were English, it would be called an M Drophead Coupe. ; -)

I read they are going to call the car a 1M.

http://www.motortrend.com/future/spi...ine/index.html

The convertible would be called a 1M Convertible.

What with BMW spending $$$ into making the M3 GTS, now the 1-series M (to slot below current M cars as a more affordable option for the younger generation) why dont they make the Z4 M that so many want. I would love to see that...a proper BMW sports car.

Whatever they end up doing either //M, or SS will be great as long as they ingineer the understeer out, and throw in an LSD, make the BMW Perf Suspension standard and maybe add selectable gear ratio as an option. I would so love a 3:73 ratio with the 6MT, it'd awesome for a push into the seat launch, and the highway mileage wouldnt suffer by much.
