I hope they make it visually and noticeably different than the 135 M-sport.

New fenders and rear quarter panel incorporating flared wheel arches. E82 in its current form looks too tall and stout, wider wheel base will help the driving dynamics as well.

Beautified hood and head lamp design.

No DCT or Automatic offering.

What sets the BMW M class apart isn't the power or speed, it's incredible handling ability. I'd want every suspension and transmission upgrade that you find in the M3/M5 to be in the M1.

estoril blue has been reincarnated as Monte Carlo blue.

The motor in this will be based on the N55 from all accounts.

Also worth noting is that the "iS" versions have overboost so they may have a blow off valve

I would like this car to keep the widened CF flares as well as the CF roof- the LSD, bigger brakes and widened track are a given.

At $45k your not getting carbon/ceramic brakes.

I WANT cloth sport seats without power windows and lightened glass.

Make this thing look like Frankenstein and give it a warranty!

Increased chassis torsional stiffness if possible, magneto-rheological dampers, M variable LSD, and a flatter torque curve that is maintained closer to redline.

I like most of the ideas, but let's face it, $40k for this car is a pipe dream. You want all these new things in the M1, you are going to have to pay for it. And I am perfectly ok with that.

Price wise, if it fits right in the middle between the current 135 and an M3, that will work just perfect.

1) Manual
2) LSD
3) Get rid of run flats / RFTs
4) More standard features, like ipod and smartphone intergration (something similar to MyFords Sync). Everyone has those these days (iphone/blackberry/droid/palm/win mobile, etc)
5) keep the weight low
6) Forged lightweight wheels and I mean lightweight, not 25lb each. I like deep dish wheels
7) Option for ceramic brakes, if they become semi-affordable by then
8) keep it under $50k and stop nick and dime for every option out there.
9) Keep the amenities (for most of us this will be a daily driver and only car)
10) Lots of torque down low (this is a given known existing engine characteristics). underrate it @350hp/350 torque
11) Better quality control (no more HPFP issues, no rattling)
12) low unsprung weight (see 6), nice M suspension with Sport/Comfort modes, keep the center of gravity low (CF roof would be of help.
13) make it handle better than Cayman S
14) Keep the M tradition of quad exhausts.. or make a nice center exhaust
15) Sound system that would not sound like a tin can (take notes from Hyundai Genesis sound system).
16) Proper powerful AC and heating units
17) Elegant LED treatments

Exotic/Optional requests:
Bubble roof aka special edition of Cayman S is pure sex.
Focused track version (limited production)

I would think it will fall somewhere in price where the e46 ///M was. Which was what... 48K for the coupe and 55k for the vert? I can't remember exactly but I remember it being around there.

Mid $40's sounds good for the coupe to me.

Hard top vert would be awesome. Or at least a CF hardtop that can be put over the softtop in the winter like the old Z3(that wasn't CF though)

Edit: BTW This is really going to hurt Z4 sales. It's currently starting between $46-51k and both cars are essentially coupes. I haven't tried to get in the back seat of a 1er but I can't imagine it's too comfortable for someone my size(6'4''). I know the Z4 is a true roadster but if your budget is $50K, I'd much rather a ///M car. But that's just me.

I don't think its asking much. However, I do believe the realistic price of a well spec'ed "M1" will certainly break the 50k mark.

Build Your Own 135i
Base MSRP $36,050
Sedona Red Metallic $550
Black Boston Leather $0
Gray Poplar Wood trim $0
Cold Weather Package $600
M Sport Package $1,300
Premium Package $3,400
Comfort Access keyless entry $500
Navigation system $2,100
iPod and USB adapter $400
Premium hi-fi system $875
Anti-theft alarm system $400
BMW Performance Short Shift Kit $576
Destination & Handling: $875
Total MSRP as Built $47,626

Add the auto-tranny and its gonna be a couple more bucks...

Assuming that most sport options are included and that we can skip the electronic goodies, I could easily find my list of options incorporated on a M1 that could be had for around 50k.

A storage shelf instead of rear seats wouldn't be expensive, mass production of carbon fiber bits isn't that expensive, sportier hard-back seats aren't that much more expensive...

The gauges should be standard on all BMW turbo cars.

Wider wheel arches don't cost anything (obviously increased cost for larger tires/wheels).

Anyway, I don't think its unreasonable to think these options could be packaged into an "affordable" M1.
