Got red thermometer on dash today

car shuts down and I coast into parking lot. Towed to dealer, initial diagnosis is electric water pump. SA says this is the first one he has seen on a 135. I have an aftermarket warranty so it will be interesting to see how well the policy works. Initial estimate is close to $1,000.

Anyone else with this experience?

LOL there's an official "when did your water pump break" thread around here in one of the sub-forums, as annoying as it is, the waterpump/thermo are essentially wear items on our cars…If mine gets me past 60K I'll be very happy. Not a cheap repair, lots of labor time involved.

Edit: it's an E90 thread, but we're all in the same boat on this one.

I checked the link, thanks

lots of TT 3.0's out there with this issue apparently. Stats on my car is 51,000 miles with Dinan Stage 1.

Good news from SA. Aftermarket warranty will pick up water pump and all labor. Will not pick up thermostat and aluminum bolts. Cost to me is $132 in parts plus $100 deductible.

All in all that's a good result, people have gotten killed out of warranty for the parts+labor. Bummer to see this happen so often, there's no reason for the pump to be failing with such regularity.

Yep, happy the a/m warranty I have stepped up...

was unsure because it transferred to me with the purchase of the car and not sure how reputable the firm is/was.

I guess I should now look into the carbon removal.

135Pats, I see you are in MD. Do you have any experience with Flemings automotive in Hyattsville by any chance?

51,xxx miles on the clock. I populated info in thread referenced above.

I just picked car up. My warranty did not cover thermostat because it did not "fail". I was surpised to see the cost was $132 for the part, no labor. Seems rather high to me.

Anyway, back on the road again.

Its these stupid overly complicated electric thermostats. It just kills german engineers to use a $4 thermostat that has worked on cars for 100 years.

My first BMW was a 74 Bavaria with the 3.0 I-6. The water pump lasted 50-60k. It's been the same on every one I've owned since. Why can't they build a decent pump? At least they finally seem to have fixed the window regulators - those also broke on every BMW I've had, up til the 135.
