went to the dealer for key fob problem... came out with...
One of my key fobs was acting up so I brought it in for replacement. So after 2 hours from dropping off my 2013 128i, I get a call from the dealer saying "yes, you need a new key fob" and "BTW, we found 2 oil leaks". WTF!
one leak was coming from oil filter housing and another was the belt tensioner. I had no idea it was leaking... no signs on the garage floor. Long story short, my car was at the dealer for 2 days. Fortunately, it was all covered under warranty. The car only barely has 19k miles. Can I expect an oil leak again in 3-4 years? |

I had the infamous oil filter housing leak a few months back. Nothing an afternoon in the garage can't fix.

Leaks happen all the time. The belly pan prevented it from being noticeable on the garage floor.
I usually inspect my engine area now and again for any leaks from up top and always thoroughly check under the engine when doing an oil change.

I just had the Hydraulic Oil Pressure Relief Valve leak. Was noticeably losing oil according to the gauge, but none was on the floor. Dealership didn't even notice, but my indy did. Also have a leak on the oil filter housing gasket and oil pan gasket that are slower and less of a concern at this time. Dealership informed me about those two, and offered to fix the OFHG for $1200. Thanks, but no thanks.

OFHG is super common and hard to see even from the top. DIY-able but not a quick job

Thanks for the feedback. Guess this is something I need to live with and prepare for. Better start looking for a good indy. Any recommendation in the SF Bay Area? East bay to be exact.

I had the infamous OFH gasket leak a few months ago.
Its a $1k job on a 135, less on a 128. Apparently this is a very common issue.

$1000.... That's awesome
I'll do it for you for $900. I'll even supply OE gaskets, coolant and fresh oil and filter for that price, and still make ~$187 an hour for my time, figuring ~$150 for the parts and 4 hours of work. Lunch and beer to be provided by the customer of course I think I could do 3 hours, but after the 3rd beer all bets are off

Warranty goes away once the 4th beer is consumed during install.

Indy shop quoted me $400 on the OFGH leak. My question is, how critical is it to get this fixed once it's noticed. There's practically nothing visible on mine, the oil around the gasket even looks dry.

$400 sounds like a good price. I think I will try to tackle this one next time. I searched for DIY but a little confused. It seems the 128 is easier to fix since there is no oil cooler. does that sound right?
