Tire Pressure
Hey guys, yesterday I get in my car heading to a meeting in Boston in pouring rain and before I even move the red light flashes up on the dash: Low Tire Pressure. Something also came up on the Nav screens saying to carefully come to a stop, but that I could drive for 50 miles to get it fixed.
Anyhow, after a visual inspection (they all looked fine but do runflats ever look flat?) I reset the system. I then went to the nearest gas station to check the pressures. I admit, I've been lazy about checking the pressures because I thought that the car did that for me- evidently not. They were all in the low 30s. Going by the sticker on the door jamb, the fronts should be 39 and the rears 41. Again, none of them were close- is this what you guys have your stock RFT inflated to? I would RTFM but the guys at the dealer must have pulled it out of the trunk when it was in for service and forgot to put it back. Thanks!

That's why I'm asking, the sticker on the door said 39 41 for 135i 18 inch stock wheels. They were all in the low 30s though so I don't know. The tires were relatively cold (only about 1 mile driven from work to gas station after sitting for 4 hours).

Pressures for 128 and 135 are different. Check the manual and start there, tweak to your taste. Tires should be cold to check.

IIRC my 08 135 coupe was 36f/36r, but i run more like 38/38 around town. but there's def some flexibility in the pressures....i do 45/42 for autocross
btw, i ditched my RFTs around 12k miles, but i run the same pressure regardless

35/36 daily. auto-x starts at 38 and I let them heat up a little to around 41 or so before I bleed a little off.

I had something simular happen to me yesterday. I was driving fast on the autobahn at 120 mph (cruising really!) and the yellow low tire pressure warning came on. The warning light continued to flash for teh rest of my drive. I slowed down to 65mph for the rest of my trip into the city here. It was pouring down rain too!!
While I was stopped at a Traffic light I turned off the engine and restarted it - to see if the TPMS light would come back on. It did! I never hit the TPMS re-set button. When I got to work... I parked the car looked at the tires and they all looked fine. I ran my hand around the circumfrance to see maybe if there was a nail or screw in one of the tires. Nothing I also touched each side wall to see if one was hotter than the others. All were the same temps. After work I preceeded to check all four tires. They were all slightly low but not really THAT low. I normally run 38 front/42 rear psi - bc I do alot of high speed driving (over 100 mph). When I checked my tires (cold) they were at 34 front/37 rear. The light should not come with those pressures. Btw... eight hours later when I check the tire pressures... the warning light did NOT come on. Only in the morning while I was on my way to work in the RAIN! lol When I looked in the owners manual, it says a yellow flashing light indicates a TPMS malfunction. Go to dealer ASAP. So... today I went to my local dealer. They read my key fob. No coded. Then they check all four tires. No screws or nails. Nothing. So.... looks like I have a bad TPMS going on me. I shall see how this gets resolved. |

How Should a BMW Dealer Handle Tire Warranty?
Straight from a PCD, the tire pressure on mine was 32/38 psi. I've recently had the right rear tire losing pressure over, say a week. This morning the tire warning come on when cranked. I drove it to the nearest air supply, about a 1/4 mile, and it turns out the RR tire had 13 psi (BMW air gauge), but the tire warning went off when I inflated to 32 psi (my car was idling and wife was in the car, so that's how I know).
If there's not a puncture in the tire is this covered under the tire warranty? And how should a BMW dealer respond? I've gotten my seat belt recall notice, so I'll be going in. pge |
