max tyre size on stock 18in rims

Hi Guys,

just wondering if anybody has tried to fit 235/40 front and 265/35 rear tyres on the standard rims?

I currently have 225 front and 255 rear with no problems at all

Look forward to your feedback

According to Gill as posted in the FAQs, that seems too wide.

I think you're already running the biggest possible size without rubbing or fitment issues. Sorry man, but maybe that's the signal for a rim upgrade?

225/255 has been confirmed over and over in these forums to be the biggest tire size on stock rims.

235/275 is the largest sizes on rims without using front camber plates

255/275 is the max on rims with using front camber plates (265/275 may be possible with fender roll and dremeling off the front bumper clip to the front quarter).

Excellent summary! I agree with this 100%.

There are variations from tire to tire, size wise, and NT01s are waaay fatter than the same listed size PS2 (for example), but fboutlaw is right on the money, generally speaking.

ok i have a 135i with the 18 x 8.5 rims. a nitto nt01 tire is my next set... so i should be able to put a 275 on the rear with no fitment issues at all right?? i know it will fit the rim just fine, as i have 275s on the f body and thye are only a 8 inch rim. not worried about the front too much, but it looks like 235s ar the biggest there? sorry to ask again, but im just a bit confused. there is not nearly enough info on 1 series

Whether the tire will fit on the rim is not the issue here. It will. You can check numerous tire fitment sites to check on this information.

The problem here is not enough information on offsets. The above quoted tire sizes use a +62 offset on the rear wheels, which just barely fits the 1 series. It tucks the rear wheel right up against the subframe with only 2-3mm of clearance. Without knowing your rim's offset, it cannot be determined if it will or won't fit.

Balls. Yea i have no idea about offsets as its confusing. Here is a pic of my rims. i looked under the car, and it sure looks like there is at least an inch of space for more tread all around the tire. btw this is a 2012 135i

I just put 235/35s all around on the stock 18" wheels. Tirerack had special pricing on that size only for the Continental DSWs last week, so I took a chance I could make them fit and ordered a set to get me through the winter.

The fronts were a real bitch to mount on the wheels with the equipment I have, but after about an hour of fighting it, I finally got the first one on. The other side only took me 15 mins or so since I then knew the trick. I don't have pics handy, but they actually don't even appear to bulge much at the front (nor do they stretch in the rear). They all look pretty damned straight up-and-down at all 4 corners.

Should have mentioned that 235/35 is ok, but 235/40 can have rubbing issues in the front of the wheel well as the tire outer diameter is so large. Generally 235/35 is not a common size, so it was not listed.

Cool. Thanks for the clarification. I'll have to write that down for myself to avoid that size when I shop summer tires.
