I do not know. You need seven liters for an oil change (actually 6.5L or 6.9quarts when changing the oil and filter. I only use BMW filters when I change my oil.

Here is where I buy my oil from(I am sure you could have it sent to the states). It is the cheapest place in Germany to buy G.C. 38 euros for a 5L jug. I normally buy two jugs. This same oil sells for 79 to 99 euros for a five liter jug locally! Gotta lover German taxes on oil and gasoline.

Thse guys also sell the BMW oils very cheaply too! Only five euros per liter. The same oil sells for 23 to 33 euros at the BMW Zentrums!!

is there harm when switching one different brand of oil every oil change ?
For ex. brand new- 5,000 miles Mobile 1
5001 miles-10,000 miles Penzoil
etc. etc.

Just trying out which oil suits best for the application.

Unless you're doing labratory analysis of your oil, nobody here has any rationale to like one oil over another...

Stick with what's on BMW's list of approved "other" oils; top of which is Mobil-1 0W40, if you don't want to use BMW's branded 5W30.

Yup, me! Like I have said in other threads... when I switched from using Mobil-1's "european blend" 0w40(LL-1) (it has a black label sold in the USA) to using German Castrol RS Edge 0w40 (LL-4) I noted two things:

1). Much quieter engine, especially on cold stats. A much less metalic sound from the motor.

2). Slightly cooler oil temps. My oil temps went down by almost two needle widths.

Those two changes were enough for me to keep using German Castrol oil. I think there must be a reason why BMW says to use them. I am convinced now.

PS: Since Castrol has stopped making Castrol RS Edge 0w40 oil, I now use their new replacement oil... Castrol Edge FST 0w40 LL-1.

As your oil temp is controlled by a thermostat that regulates the flow to the oil cooler, unless your thermostat is coincidentally starting to fail (mine has once), your car will always run a minimum 110deg Celcius for operating temp, regardless of oil.

I can tell you that is NOT the case with my car. And others have also noticed this behavior when they switched to G.C. My car runs cooler with G.C. than with Mobil-1, about two needle widths cooler.

Dackelone, what is your take on Amsoil over GC? Have you used them and found any difference like with the mobil and GC?

Thanks,

Thanks,
I have no experience with Amsoil.

I have only reported what my first hand experience has been with Mobil-1 vs the German Castrol oils.

I'm sure i'm going to get hell for this but... who cares? Oil is oil is oil is oil... Synthetic vs. conventional there are differences, with weights there are differences (i.e. 5w30 vs. 10w40, tho even with this there isn't much of a difference really.) but no brand is any better than any other brand when you are comparing major brands. You're motor will not wear out or produce any more horsepower if you go with castrol vs. mobil 1.

And if anyone on this site lives and dies by the 3000 mile oil change rule, i'm going to come to your house and put your used oil back in your car while you sleep... cuz you're just wasting money.
