Ipod Interface Adapter vs. iPod USB Adapter?

I have noticed during many of my trips to the 1er config., that you can either get an iPod adapter from the accesory($320) section, or one from the option section ($400). Is there any difference??

If it is like the 3-series, the iPod interface sold as an accessory is the one where the iPod cable is in the glove box.

The one that is sold as an option (6FL) has the exact same functionality, but it resides in the center console, and additionally it can play music from USB thumb drives.

I'm not sure why BMW continues to offer the old one (glove box). Everything I have read indicates the newer 6FL option let's you do everything the old interface does (iPod stays charged while connected, song/artist info displays on radio display or Nav screen if you have it, iPod is controlled through radio/steering wheel radio controls).

Perhaps because the glove box one is dealer-installed, BMW sees no reason not to offer it, since it doesn't complicate anything on the back-end for them.
