VANOS Recall, 2 days??
I got an email from my dealer and I called my SA and they said it will probably be a two day thing.
Has anyone ever had the bolt issue effect them? Like...have they broke or cracked or whatever? To me it seems there are two risks: 1.) The risk of driving your car and having the bolts crack or whatever 2.) The dealership taking part of your engine apart and messing something up. I drive a 128i, I'm not super familiar with knowing the car in and out, it's just a bit scary having my car at the dealership for two days. Thoughts? Thanks. Oh......and does the recall come with a warranty? Taking a good portion of the engine apart, if they mess something up and the car is out of manufacturer warranty....?? It will take as long as it takes, and you shouldn't worry, they'll take care of your car. You should get it done. The work will be covered.
I'm still waiting for the second recall letter saying that the parts are in.

My car has been the shop for 2 weeks. Picked it up Friday, didn't get 5 miles out before the damn half engine sign went on. Shes back at the ship.

I was in and out in one day. Also had power steering flush and fuel lines serviced same day. Grant my car wasn't the first to go through the process at Fairfax BMW so I'm sure the tech had some practice time before he got to my car.

The techs I know personally at my local dealer performed my VANOS recall in 3 hours....
Granted I dropped the car off at 10am but they couldnt start work on it until 1pm because its key that the engine is very COLD to torque down certain bolts properly when replacing the VANOS, but once they started the actual job at 1pm, they were done by 330pm/4pm.. So I'm not sure why your dealer needs 2 days lol |

The dealer doesn't have to take much of the engine bay apart to get to the bolts. I replaced my bolts and solenoids, taking my time and talking to people it took about 4 hours.

I got a letter from BMW in July about the issue. They said at the time, they'd contact me when the parts got to my dealer. Well it is the middle of October and not a word from them.
I recently checked with the dealer, and he told me they had the parts. Previous to that, I had called BMW who said the parts should be arriving soon. What commitment to customer relations and good service? |

Depending if the bolts break. They will find there way into the oil pan. Then the oil pan has to come down. Takes some time.

Just for all a little FYI
Recall pays about 4.5 hrs Guys getting it done in 2.5 not rushing, just that it's repetitious. The engine does have to be room temp for proper torque of the bolts. If they open it up and find a loose or broken bolt the vanos gear has to be replaced. If the head broke off they MUST search till they find the head that broke off. It's an aluminum bolt so magnets don't work. The heads usually trickle down the timing chain and end up in the oil pan. If it's not there then they have to look elsewhere like under the cams or eccentric shaft.

Guys don't wait for another letter to come stating they have the parts. I called (Leith BMW) for service appointment (P2177 code) and asked about the recall then. They advised they had parts for recall and would replace parts on Friday. I was waiting on the 2nd letter advising they had parts also. Contact your dealer they might have the parts.

Happy VANOS recall.
I was calling my dealer about once each month. They claimed no parts. Then a few weeks ago, on my regular monthly call, they suddenly had the parts. Not only that, but they claimed to have done about 60 VANOS recalls by then at the rate of about 5 per day. I was happy to hear this. I did not want my car to be first. Also...after some conversation, my service advisor volunteered that they had only found one car with any broken bolts. Anyway, my 135i was dropped off at 8:00 AM, done by noon and back in my hands by 3:00 PM and running just fine.

They have to wait 4-5 hours for the car to cool down. And if anything else is wrong, they'd rather have told you it would take longer initially than calling you and telling you they need your car for an extra day.

Had mine done along with water pump replacement. Took it in Friday night due to water pump, and had them do VANOS bolts at the same time...they started Sat morning and had car back by 3PM same day.

Issues after VANOS recall work?
Had VANOS bolt replacement recall work done recently. According to dealer, none of the bolts were loose or broken. They were replaced.
After getting car back, immediately started hearing loud knocking noise on top of the engine when unlocking the car before starting and when locking car after shutting off. No check engine light or other check control icons appeared. Seems very strange that new noise is in same area where dealer was performing recall work. Wondering if dealer inadvertently did something to cause this while completing the recall work. Has anyone else had issues immediately following completion of the VANOS recall work? |
