2011 128i Convertible Sporadic Acceeleration
Hello everyone. I tried to find a thread specific to the problem I am having with my vehicle but couldn't find something spot on so if this exists somewhere else already please let me know and sorry for starting a new thread!
I have a 2011 128i Convertible that is giving me sporadic acceleration and random bursts of rpms at an idle much like an engine auto-stop/restart feature except my car is not equipped with that technology! The sporadic acceleration feels much like very short periods of loss of power at lower rpms when I am getting up to speed from any mph. I also get the same issue when I punch the throttle except the losses of power are even more apparent. To me it feels like a gear slipping and catching when putting a load on the rotation (just an example). I have read on here about doing a throttle reset? Is there a procedure to do that on a 2011 128i? I have not found much on the random engine revving at idle.. I was hoping someone on here may have experienced the same thing and has a bit of knowledge on the issues. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

I had something that sounds similar and it was an early sign of a coil pack going bad. I got bad misfires within 3 months of the "power hiccup". It's likely to be in the ignition sequence: coils, plugs, injectors etc. Have you had the codes pulled? They might tell you something. Pep Boys and others will read codes for free.
Of note, even when the engine was misfiring like crazy, I didn't have any check engine light.

Solution
You are exactly right. I took her to a bmw specialist shop to have her worked on and it was a bad coil. The spark plugs were just about ready to be replaced so I replaced all of them and the bad coil. Now she runs like a champ. The engine would sense a misfire in the cylinder with the bad coil and shut down the fuel injector to that cylinder to prevent further damage causing massive vibrations. Fairly inexpensive fix considering I thought it was a much larger issue!
