Good day at the Dyno.
Yesterday I met up with some M3 owners and a Merc AMG C63 at the dyno, and I have to tell you I was pleased with the 1M as it held its own especially with the M3's.
The only mods I have are a MadDad mid and CP-E 1M SS exhaust, other than that absolutely OEM. My max HP was 333 and max torque was 372 ft/lbs! To put this into perspective all three M3's were within 2 HP of my number with the M3's putting about 243 ft/lbs down on the dyno. Another pleasant surprise was that while the AMG C63 was putting 400 WHP; I bested it by 6 ft/lbs. It was great to get same Dyno, same day, same temperature data with some other cars. I cannot tell you how happy I was when all the cars were done and realizing the beast that lies underneath the hood. So here is a copy of my sheet, I will get the 5 car overlay soon to post that as well. Last edited by RPMjunkie; 01-27-2013 at 12:25 PM.. |

No E9x M3's. The M3 owners were stating that all of them came in low horsepower-wise. Even the C63 was rated at like 500+ HP at the crank only put 400 HP to the dyno. This dyno may be reporting low HP number, however the numbers still work on a comparison basis for all 5 cars. On another dyno perhaps the M3's would probably put about 340-350 HP to the wheels, but then again so could I with all things being equal. Here are the M3's ad the C63

When we had a dyno day in Houston at msr Houston, similar results were seen on m3s. Around 330-340 whp, even for cars with bolt ons.
We're all the m3s (even tuned ones vs stock) around the same hp / torque? I'd be curious to see their reSults. Great run btw, 1m ftw

Yes, the dark gray M3 was the only stock car out of the bunch, and ironically had the highest HP at 335 for the group of M3's. The other two had a same exact ECU reflash and that's it. |

Impressive, thanks for sharing!
I don't understand how the real whp numbers are so equal in the 1M and in the M3 and the factory numbers are so different, if BMW was conservative with the 1M it should have been with the M3 too I guess, BMW isn't stupid and woudn't annouce numbers that are impossible to prove real so, to me, it makes no sense, also the 1M acceleration numbers seem to look normal for a 340hp car, ~16/17 seconds to 200kph (124mph), more a less the same as a base Porsche 911 carrera (997.2) with 345hp. Since the 1M and M3 acceleration numbers are so equally matched, maybe it's the M3 that is slow for a 420hp car?? |

Sounds about right. I dynoed my M3 at Carbconn back in 2009 when I lived in Seattle. Stock with just Eisenmann muffler and drop in filter it put I believe 338whp and then with aftermarket Fabspeed high flow cats, Eisenmann, and filter it put down 362whp from what I remember. Definitely impressive numbers for the 1M!

That's outstanding!. I'd say the comparison results prove that that dyno reads good to a little low. For the M3's, 340 on the dyno calculates out to very close to 400 at the flywheel. Mercedes probably pushes the C63 number a little just to get close to that magical 500hp number.
So really the number that is way off is the 1M. Basically BMW stock tuned the 1M to what should pretty much be called 400hp and 450ft/lbs!! What makes that especially nice is it should help y'all resist the temptation to add a tune since that's pretty much the numbers you'd get with those mods from a tune!

A tuned 1m is definitely faster than a stock one. Guess the same cant be said for the m3 sucks for the owners of the tuned car

Mike over at the M3 forum posted the three M3's highest pulls, so here they are for comparison. To reiterate the stock M3 had the highest HP, and all of our cars were in 4th gear.

One has to appreciate that kind of a torque curve of the stock M3, impressive! This is one type of an engine that must not be tuned imo.
