Oil change thread

2010 BMW 128i and I am at 7,000 miles since last oil change.
Any tips? I have changed all my other Bimmers but never a e82.
Thanks for looking and helping.

The stickied thread by JimD helped me a lot when I did my first oil change.

I believe the socket sizes you need and the torque spec for the oil screw are all there. Even suggestions for various tools to open the oil filter cap.

I'll throw this piece of advice in here:

#1
Get an oil filter cap wrench attachment. I have a volvo cap wrench and it works fine (just get the right size), figure same thing as the BMW specific sockets just without the BMW tax. I used a rubber strap wrench the first time, and it just didn't satisfy me. I also broke one of the strap wrenches. You don't have to spend $40 on the filter wrench, but definitely get one, it makes things so much easier.

#2
Take your time properly lubing and placing the filter o-rings in. It's easy to do it right, but also easy to do it wrong. It might try to slip on you as you start threading the filter cap on. Just watch for that and adjust the o-ring as necessary.

I tried the Volvo spec cap wrench from Pep Boys but had to return it because it kept slipping and a strap wrench was useless. BMW seriously over tightened the cap. Bought the tool from BavAuto and it worked fine. Much heavier gauge and did not flex & slip when loosening the over torqued cap. Already had the 7mm socket for my wife's 530

^^ There are at least 3 different sizes that I have seen for Volvo wrenches. That might have been your problem.

The drain plug is a wimpy little thing and one need go absolutely straight on and best to use a 6 point socket. Now, real oem states that a new drain plug be used with each oil change. I just found this out. I'll probably change it out with every 2nd oil change. Another and better alternative would be the magnetic drain plug sold by Bav Auto. Its made by Dimple and a few others here use it and its of very high quality and can be reused indefinitely.

Just buy a Dimple magnetic drain plug. They really are made well and the magnet is super strong to pull up any metal bits floating around in your oil.
