New 5 series, I feel sorry for our 1s

My dealer had mid size car competitors driving event including all new 5 series. They have two models 535 and 550, however 535 was available for driving. Unfortunately I reached the dealer at rush time, so freeway driving at 5mph was ridiculous. So I used side street just to see how well the car in city driving. It is really impressive, very smooth and powerful N55, adaptive suspension, incredibly accurate steering. Can be pulled forward quite quickly, quite, comfortable drive, endless electronics features bringing Lexus in shame. Impressive EPA 20/29 with step.
From negative side I can tell only very inconvenient place for cup holders. I never use them; however people who I drive sometimes drink. Useless smoker package, I would prefer extra storage, but for something else, for example sun glasses. I prefer 1 series steering wheel thickness, although 550 has better steering wheel, it still is not matching 1.
When I returned in 1 after test driving I had impression of so cheap car, so wanted to trade in immediately for new 5 series. What is still good in 1 with N54? Noticeably more responsive acceleration. I need floor 535 to make it move, and I can do the same with just light taping gas pedal in 1. ! seems still better in maneuvers and braking. Will I really replace 1 by 5? I do not know, I like luxury of 5, but… maybe try Z4?

I did this test too. I drove the 535i, the 650ci, and a MB C350.

I wasn't too fond of the 535. It is a nice gentle car for someone who wants to relax on the road. I much preferred my 135. If I needed a back seat for kids, etc. I would be more inclined to get a 335 sedan.

This 535 is a very nice car but not for me.

The only car that brought a smile to my face was the 650ci. Lots of power, nice driver focused cockpit and a drop top. What's not to like besides the price? It feels more like a fighter plane cockpit than a 3 series convo.

Drove new 535 recently, felt like old man car. All the luxury, but no fun. Takes forever from the time you floor the accelerator and it starts moving.
Not my cup of tea, and honestly not really a bimmer in my opinion...

I sat in the new 5er last week. I was pretty nice inside but the front of the car is so exaggerated. Similar to the new Z4, when you look into the front grills all you see is empty space. I hate it. From the front of the bumper I bet it's over a foot to the nearest engine component. Not efficient, not pretty, not getting my money.

Hmmm...isn't there a $30K price differential between the new 5 and 1? Likewise, it would foolish for me to try to compare my CL600 or 600 Grosser to my 135i.

Not sure about the new 5, but a loaded 135i was more expensive than the base 5 series. But I don't think anyone in their right mind would cross shop a 1 and 5 series. Totally different purposes.

My 135i weights 300 pounds too much. Dragging another 700 lbs around would not excite me.

So...your comparing a $35K to a $50K car, and you are surprised that the $50K car is better? Is that what I'm getting from this, or am I missing the point...?

He's just making an observation people. Other than the 1er and the current ///M models, there are too many "exciting" BMWs.

I came from an E46 3 series and I still found the E82 1 series interior to be a step up, especially with the addition of idrive. It's not the fanciest of interiors, it's fairly plain and simple but it's at a standard where I'm more than satisfied because I bought my car for other reasons

The only 5 I would be interested in starts with an M, otherwise it's a family car or an old man car.

Who the hell paid 35k for their 1... My sticker was 43k... The 135i and the 5 (the regular 5) are like a Professional Skateboarder and a Doctor.... Im 21 I don't like the new 5 and never will... (unless its a M5)... I knew what the 1 was before I bought it and thats why I bought it...... Could of had a preowned M3 but I wanted a new car..... (that wasn't used and abused)... Ya its nice but I think you are crazy for paying that kind of money for a car that isn't even going to turn heads...

I went to the same event but in NJ. I thought the 535 was too slow. The 550 has okay pickup but the car itself felt too "grown up". Nice car for somebody who wants to just cruise. Not for me but maybe for someone older.

If you really like the new 5 then sell your 1er and get the 5 series, there is not a fair comparision between the two.

I honestly don't care for the interior of our 1 series, it's nice enough for me, it's not luxurious by any means but when you compare it to other non-euro cars, it's not bad at all. The interior is the last thing I want upgraded in the 1 series. If BMW decided to give the interior and overhaul for the newer year model I think it would be a step in the wrong direction. Improvements like DCT transmission, LSD, better tyres, few extra horsepower etc etc are things I want to see in future 1 series models, particularly the 135i.

Maybe it's the enthusiast coming out in me but I think the majority of the 135i drivers who actively participate on the forums are of the same breed. Sure, some of us don't mind doing cosmetic mods to the 1er to bring it to its potential but the interior is in my opinion, on par with what Mercedes and Audi have to offer, or at least not far off. It's the last of my concerns and I am never by any means embarrassed to have someone sit in my car. What is under the hood of my car is more important to me than what the buttons on my dashboard look like. Just my 5 cents.

I drove the 550i yesterday. Definitely not a 1er. While a nice ride it was somewhat more isolated from the road as the 1er. It was more luxurious and definitely targetting a different driver as the 1er. It was also $76,000 with options.

Honestly, this is a silly comparison. The two cars are built to emphasize different purposes. It should come as no surprise that a 1-series is neither as luxurious nor as comfortable as a 5. Personally, I abhor the "upgrade" mentality, as if one should necessarily prefer the larger, more powerful, more expensive alternative in any situation. By the same token, you could argue that the 7 shames the 5, and a Rolls shames them all.

I personally disagree totally with you on this, I think the interior is quite choice for a luxury sports coupe. Its not overly rediculous like chrome trim n superduper poofy seats, its well organized, trim and classy, yet sporty where need be like the seats, the wheel, and other little things like the shifter placement, etc.

I even had a bitch about the lower armrest that doesnt adjust in this car, but ive had the car 3 months now and im already used to it, it feels fine to me now
