Cupholder in place of coin holder?
Has anyone fashioned or found a cupholder that would fit in place of the coin holder near the armrest? That seems like a logical place for a single-drink cupholder.

Coin holder? Is this a non iDrive feature?
I think the 4 cup holders in the car are more than enough for my purposes.

I haven't taken delivery yet, but does that "frosty" cup holder actually make things "frosty"? I'd imagine it'll only make sure my ipod Nano doesn't overheat.

They might release one later and charge 40 bucks for it like they did for the older 5.

Wow didn't realize there was a coin holder. I've been looking and finally just decided to use the ashtray, since no smoking allowed inside my car.

look, i didn't buy the car for the cup holders. if i did, i would have kept my honda accord. i love my car and wouldn't have any other one for the price, but let's be real; BMW could have made a better effort here. |

My front passenger's side cup holder is stuck now.
I have to bring my car in for a service for a FREAKING CUP HOLDER. my cousin's kia doesn't have this problem. Like parafrog said, I didn't buy bmw expecting nice cup holders. but like parafrog said again, they could've done better. I mean, bmw's famous "Testing, testing and testing" phase didn't include testing out the cupholders???

Until fairly recently BMWs did not have cup holders of any design. Typical Germans do not drink and drive. They feel that the driver should concentrate on driving. It was with great reluctance that they accepted that American drivers expected them. It was a similar situation with the sun roof a few years earlier. The Germans thought Americans crazy for wanting a car with both a sun roof and an air conditioner.

Unless I'm driving a very long distance, I have no need to consume liquid beverages in the car. I think the cupholders that are there are fine. I like the little console cubby as a place to put small objects that I don't want to forget.
EDIT: And I agree with ben1364 - I think the job of operating the vehicle is more than enough to keep me busy. I don't need any hobbies like drinking coffee, eating breakfast, reading the paper, etc. Americans tiny little brains can barely keep their cars between the white lines as it is without all the stupid shit they do while driving.

Having seen "Supersize Me" though I understand that in the US beverage sizes are approaching that of a small tanker though and those cup holders would certainly be inadequate

The cup holders in my E46 were great. They were located in exactly the right position (for me)...right in front of the armrest and low. I found that the ones in the E90 are a bit of a stretch to reach and a little too high. I find it a pain to manuever the cup back into the holder, especially on bumpy roads. At least on the E46 you could rest your arm on the armrest for stability and slide the cup down into the holder.
I know there are people who don't use the cup holders simply because they don't have the need, there are those who forbid eating or drinking in their car, and those who eat/drink/shower/live in their car. I simply want a place to hold my morning cup of brew during the commute and wish the cup holders were better. I agree with chartster, that would be a better place for a cup holder, but I too have iDrive Basically, the US E90 was not designed with cup holders in mind. They were an afterthought, like many of the previous BMW models. It's not a priority in the design phase. I know for a fact that the E39 5 series had absolutely no cup holders in the first tooled design of the car. Look at where they are located and you can easily see what they did to cram them into the car prior to release into the US.

It's nice that the Germans consider smoking essential to the driving experience. It's funny that they consider transporting a cup of coffee from Starbucks to the office a distraction, but puffing on a cigarette and finding a place to put the ashes is perfectly logical.

let me tell you zep, americans are doing just fine behind the wheel compared to the rest of the world. like charster said, europeans drive while chain smoking, yapping on their cell phones with children in the back that most likely are not in car seats. they pass in no passing zones while creating their own third lane down the middle. and this is just italy. don't even get me started on the other places i've mentioned, where people think farm equipment with absolutely no lights/blinkers or safety restraints are perfect for highway travel. bad american drivers? oh please...there are idiot drivers everywhere. by the way, i love europe and love living in italy. the people are awesome. but i don't wan't to hear how the tiny brained americans are too busy multi-tasking while behind the wheel. it's all good. |
