Looking at a used 08 135i Friday - input?

I was originally planning to get a white base 2009 135i w/just sport package, manual and a black trim interior. But the local dealer has a used 08 135i almost exactly as I wanted with 4k miles on it. The story behind it was a guy bought it for his son who didn't like it and got a shelby mustang instead. They are asking $40,900 for it, but I'm sure I can get them down in price. The only thing I don't like is the silver trim interior.

http://www.bmwofaustin.com/Search-BM...oryId=25628805

I stopped and looked it over, and I'm going back to see it Friday morning around 10am and try to deal on it.

What's a fair price? Any thing to check being that it's used?

Input/thoughts?

Thanks

**EDIT** - I know for sure it's got the premium and sport packages, as well as Nav, comfort access and leather seats. It's a manual even though the ad says Automatic.

If the son was under 20 years of age I'd pass - that car may have had a hard 4K miles.

My 2-cents...

My working assumption is that the car is a Certified Pre-Owned by your dealership. This carries substantial weight because the service dept. holds a pre-owned vehicle to a higher standard (and meticulous inspections) before certifiying it.

If it is Certified, this might keep them from coming down much on the price, but you are assured of getting a well-inspected vehicle that the dealer (and, indirectly, BMW) will be standing behind.

Also, I would by-pass the sales staff for a moment and go straight to the service dept, where you should request a copy of the car's service history. In particular, try to establish if the previous owner (or Dad) brought the car in for it's recommended check up after the new car break-in period (recommended after first 1200 - 1500 miles). If this was done, it would be a major thumbs-up in evaluating the care the car received by the kid.

Assuming the vehicle has the original tires on it, ask if the previous owner purchased the run-flat tire warranty; if so, some coverage might be grandfathered in to you. While you are at it, eyeball the tires and look for signs of excessive wear or "curb-scrapes" on the tires and rims.

Lastly, if you have not already done so, you might also consult the Dealer Reviews & Ratings forum, and pour over all mentions of BMW of Austin. This could provide some good insight on your dealership through the eyes of other customers.

Sorry about the length of this post. To paraphrase Mark Twain, "It would've been shorter but I didn't have the time."

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

If what my dealer told me when I bought my '05 330i is correct, they won't certify anything under a couple of years old because the cost of certification is high enough to push the certified used car higher in cost than a new one.

Before taxes, my reasonably loaded '09 (CA, Premium, Sport, Nav, Cold Weather, iPod, HD Radio) came out to 42K (dealer gave me a couple k off, of course the taxes are going to kick it up way higher than that...) so 40K for a used '08 doesn't seem all that amazing of a deal. At 36K, though, I'd be all over it.

Got my fully loaded 08 (pretty much everything except premium) for less than that....and it was new... I'd pass as well unless they work on the price.

I'd order new. BTW, why does the description say the car is automatic? In the photo it's a stick.

Really? Huh? My CA never apprised me/made-any-mention of a 1,200-1,500 mile post break-in check-up.:iono:First I've heard of this, some fine print deal? I would not think so...

The dealer said the original sticker on the car was $43k or so. I told him I was interested in a new base for $37k. He asked if they can get the 08 to $37k would I be interested? I think for $37k I would considering the premium, nav and sport packages. Still planning to go see it tomorrow at this point.

09 nav is very sick. New is the way I would go. Again, too much risk. I would only be interested if EVERYTHING matched what I wanted. And the price is also very attractive!

You asked and we have spoken.

I'd be willing to bet that that thing saw a harsh 4,000 miles.

+1 for just going new.

Ps I would recommend not settling for an interior (or exterior) color when you have your mind made up. When I got my first GTI, I passed up a black on black leather (what I wanted, due for delivery a month away) for a black on beige sitting on the showroom floor. Despite loving that car to death the three years I had it, I could never get over passing up black leather.

My service rep merely recommended it; it is not official policy on the 1s (although I was told a 1,200 mile check up is generally advised for new M3s).

The dealer's motorsports team had my car on the track before I purchased it, so it's safe to assume it's been broken in. Then again, it's entirely possible that their track testing has something to do with the salesman's recommendation for a post-purchase check-up. Anyway, it's a freebie and a good excuse to borrow a loaner and mooch food from their lounge!

Yep, that's me. The dealership admitted that the eBay auction was kind of a marketing gimmick to generate interest - which it did (the car got written up on Jalopnik and a few other auto sites).

It was on display in the dealership's showroom, and caught my eye when I was dropping off my wife's X5 for service. I read some online reviews of the 135i, then talked to service guys and performance advisors at the dealership... THEN I went looking for a salesman. (Which, when you think about it, sounds like a pretty smart way to buy a car - except none of this was planned out on my part... it was really just a bunch of happy accidents that led to the purchase).

I admit, the custom paint and carbon fiber bodywork is really over the top (borderline obnoxious, even), but the engine, exhaust, big brakes, struts and suspension makes for a bloody hoot of a ride. All things considered, they did a darned good job putting the car together, and I'm awful lucky to have it.
