Cost to repaint a car? Your experience?

Anyone have any experience with this? I have watched 1000s of car shows and know the level of work involved to get it done right but I really have no clue what people pay out of pocket to have a quality shop do the work.

Its a bit different bringing them a old muscle car that needs a lot of body work first. What about a near brand new car?

I will be looking for a used 135 / 335 in the next year or so. and eventually down the road I might want to look at a custom paint job anyway. And if its something I could afford down the road (first year or so) then I could settle for a used car in a color i am not in love with.

Just wondering what your experience might be if any.

The biggest cost is the prep work. Removing modlings, door handles, sanding, priming, etc ... Anybody can spray paint. Probably to do it right you're looking at $5-8k.

why not get it wrapped instead? if you take care of a wrap they can last pretty long. also, with a wrap you will be preserving the paint beneath and the car will have a much better re-sale value with a factory color.

Re-paint and custom paint prices cover a wide range fan many reasons. A simple proper re-paint where all of the exposed surfaces are painted can cost $3000 if the current paint justs needs minor prep. Custom paint can easily double or triple that cost. It depends on what you want, the current condition of the vehicle, the talent of the shop, the hourly rate and material costs.

Any repaint, custom or not, will kill the resale value of your car. I'd look into a vinyl wrap as suggested above.

Wow the more and more I read about it the more I think this is a fantastic Idea. Even just for the sake of being able to pull of the wrap after X years and have basically brand new paint still underneath.
