Hey guys,

the above pics do a great job of illustrating the shortcomings of the BMW OE core.

When comparing the frontal surface area and volume of the OE core to our Stage 1 Earl's core, the BMW unit is clearly undersized.

What is also significant from a perspective of improving heat transfer, is the actual design of the air fins within the rows of the core and obviously the number of rows themselves.

As you can see from the below pic, the air fins within our core are much tighter in spacing and significantly larger in number.

This design greatly increases the surface area of the core, which allows for improved heat transfer as a result of the increased efficiency of the design.

FYI,

the (Stage 1) 19 row Earl's cooler and the 25 row unit feature the exact same "modular" design.

The only difference being that the (Stage 2) 25 row unit is just a little bigger overall.

Lastly a quick word on the oil lines we are using for both Stage 1 & Stage 2 kits.

Ummm,

they are the very best.

Seriously though the oil lines we have chosen to utilise, are the absolute premium Earl's have to offer, from their entire product range.

These are without a doubt motorsport grade oil lines.

IIRC there has been mention of a few oil line failures from a couple of the US produced kits.

I can guarantee that will never happen with the lines pictured below.

They are bad arse.

They are of course a rubber hose with a nylon sheath.

Notably the second pic illustrates the "partial coverage stainless inner braid", that runs the length of the hose.

There are much cheaper lines available that Pete could have used, but as I said before he is not in the business of "making a quick buck".

Any N54/N55 product that comes out of Advan Performance in the near future, will be a top shelf component.

I might even be tempted to put one or two of those components into my own car.

Hey Gents,

I hope to be able to post up the group buy price tonight, as I will be speaking to Peter today.

However before I do so, I would like to highlight one last component feature of our kit, that being the use of -10 AN fittings throughout the entire oil cooler kit.

This is significant because the larger the internal diameter (ID) of the many fittings and oil lines used, the less restriction there is to oil flow across the components.

Essentially better flow means less potential for a decrease in oil pressure.

FYI,

Pete had a closer look at the Stett Stage 2 kit that is in my car and to his surprise all the fittings, oil lines etc. are not -10 AN, but -8.

That is not to say that the Stett kit is piece of junk, nothing could be further from the truth.

However it does illustrate another area where one could save on costs, when developing an oil cooler kit from scratch.

As a reference for you guys,

a -8 fitting has an ID of 11.18 mm, where as a -10 has an ID of 14.48 mm.

As I said before,

the larger internal diameter equates to better flow, across the entire oil cooling system.

The better the flow, the less potential there is for a drop in oil pressure, within the critical oil galleries of the engine itself.

With -10 AN fittings used on every component, that is NOT a concern with the Advan Performance kit.

Cheers,

JD.

I may have to pull out of the oil cooler at this time, I have a bunch of other goodies arriving, which are causing me some scheduling conflicts on when to get them installed without the little woman finding out. Just need to see how difficult santas presents are to install.

Can do,

no problem at all.

I suspect FedEx will be the best shipping option.

From my experience they are certainly the most safe and reliable.

Cheers,

JD.

for a 100+ bucks difference I'm not fussed.
I just want to talk to peter about the pros and cons about both.

Is the install still going to be 500?

Hey mate,

in that the case I will put you down for a Stage 2 kit.

Have you got Advan's number?

IMHO the only con with regards the Stage 2 (25 row) cooler, is the extra 150 dead Washington's you have to cough up.

If you PM me your mobile number I will have Pete give you a call.

Lastly yes the install cost remains at $500 inc.GST.

Cheers,

JD.

Hey mate,

unfortunately the shipping cost via FedEx is quite substantial.

I would prefer to investigate a less costly alternative before I provide the quote, because "it ain't pretty".

Hi minijet,

whilst we currently do not have 5 purchasers within Aus, I suspect we will have the numbers via members on the US forum, once the Stage 1 & Stage 2 oil cooler kits are completed and ready to ship out.

Feel free shoot me a PM in a couple of weeks if you change your mind.

Cheers.

Hi guys,

following test fitments of our Stage 1 and Stage 2 Earl's oil cooler, we discovered that there is no way to position them ideally to achieve maximum airflow through the core.

Unfortunately if we were to use the original oil coolers we had in mind, they would not be operating at their full efficiency.

As such we have decided to now go with a Setrab core that allows for the most ideal mounting location,

thus maximising the potential transfer of heat from the engine oil.

Here are some pics of the 15 row cooler that will be used in our Stage 1 kit.

Our Stage 2 kit will utilise a 20 row cooler that is of the same width and depth.

FYI,

the brackets and mounting hardware you see are purely just to confirm correct fitment.

The finished brackets will be made of 3mm steel, that has been laser cut and powder coated black. The fasteners etc. will also be of the highest quality and obviously more discreet.

Lastly we have decided to make our Stage 1 kit as affordable as possible, by doing away with the external thermostat and associated hardware, that we have in our Stage 2 kit.

As a result the 15 row core kit will be significantly cheaper than our original pricing and very much aimed at those guys who are on an "entry level" budget.

Hey minijet,

that is not Peter's fault, that is my oversight!

Peter gave me your contact details when I was last at Advan, but I misplaced them, I do apologise.

Please shoot me a PM with your mobile number and I will give you a call before lunch time tomorrow, as I will be at Advan sorting out a few details.

FYI,

the revised Stage 1 kit will retain the use of the BMW OE thermostat.

I thought I should mention that now,

just in case you were of the belief that the kit would operate without a thermostat, in the oil line to the cooler.

Cheers,

JD.

Hey Tim,

not a problem at all.

We plan to have the 1 Series kits squared away by the end of January.

So come late Feb, we will be able to supply either the Stage 1 or Stage 2 kit without delay.

Cheers,

JD.

Why don't you post the price for those who just want the oil cooler option with and without the lower thermo.

Hey minijet,

the final cost of the Stage 1 kit was not going to be simply determined by the cost of the thermostat.

We have been waiting on final pricing of the -10 oil housing adapter and the bracket fabrication.

Now that we have both we can calculate our revised group buy price.

To be honest guys,

I think you would be quite surprised how small the profit margin is on these kits.

Pete would love to be making more of a buck on the R&D he has put into this, he is running a business after all.

However our goal is to make available to the marketplace products of the highest quality, that are also affordable and truly excellent value for money.

Cheers,

JD.
