I use a GoPro Hero wide angle. Small, good quality, many mounting options, and easy to use. Will do nice video, or ongoing shots at a couple second intervals. Can also use it as a simple 5MP camera. Just use an SD card. The older ones (which work great) can often be found online used for cheap or new for a little over $100. There is a new HD one with rechargable LI battery that is like 179-199. Look at goprocamera.com for descriptions and examples. It also comes with a waterproof case and my kids have taken some great underwater shots in the pool and the ocean. Just my .02

actually the HD version retails for $299 but I was able to find one for $235. comes with a bunch of mounting brackets. audio is kind of sucky but the video quality is spot on. rich, where are the videos?!

I've wanted a mount so I could film myself driving occasionally. But never spent the time to get one so I could use it. I googled this need again today and found:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...RBRM7XB4T5GKMD

$27 and it gets lots of good reviews. It mounts to the inside of the windshield. I would feel better about mounting a camera (in video mode) or video camera on the inside of the windshild where I won't loose the camera if the mount fails.

What kinda cell phone you have? The newer ones shoot in HD. My bros Droid Incredible and my friends Samsung Fascinate both have dash mounts which can be easily modified to allow the camera to record the run. You get a usable mount for daily driving combined with a way to record runs. Win x 2.

All sorts for around 20 bucks on Amazon, but I have no experience with them. The key is to find one where the "backing" doesn't block the camera lens and you can spin/move it so the arm/suction isn't in the way either. Play with ones in store for a better idea, Best Buy *might* have some.

BTW - iPhone 4 camera takes real good autocross video, my bud took a bunch from the sidelines with his.

using my iphone would be the best option for me..

however, I can't see them allowing a phone mounted to the windshield since they're very good at enforcing the whole no loose parts in the car rule..

Secured to a windshield mount is not loose parts. Otherwise GoPro HDs would not be allowed, and every region I know of allows them. Just as long as the mount is good quality, I see no difference.

Emailed the folks at EMRA, and here's the first response I got:

"That doesn't look very secure to me. It looks like it is just meant to hold it so it can function as a GPS device."

They then forwarded it to the tech guy, who replied the following:

"Sorry, no go on the Arkon mount. Suction cup systems always fail in our conditions."

To be quite honest I don't see that thing being safe either. I have a radar detector mounted to the windshield with suction cups and that thing falls off every now and then...

i ASSURE you that the gopro mount is not the average suction cup mount, it has an air lock seal on it making it very very strong. I have gone into tripple digits and dont worry at all about this falling off, even on the outside of the car.

Sorry, I confused "track" with "autocross" since we had a conversation regarding autocross in another thread. Ignore my advice, phone mounts won't be allowed for track duty.

I have this one. I don't like it bc the only way you can mount a camera is upside down using it. The mounting arm needs to be much longer to work right side up. Fail.

I ended up just buying a SILK pan ball mount. I think I paid $30 bucks for it. Then I went to the German hardware store and bought a meter long alu square pipe/block for three euros. I cut it down to size and mounted it on the passenger head rest via some long 70mm long bolts. Works quite well.

I have GoPro HD, love it.

Suction Cup on GoPro: It is industrial grade, if you try to yank it off the hoof without releasing the vacuum, I GUARANTEE you that you will bend your hood. It is STRONG and it was just fine at speeds 130mph @ Mid-Ohio.

For $300 it is an awesome deal. There are bullet cams etc. for much more $$$ But that solution only gives you less wind-noise and that's it.

With the latest firmware upgrade, GoPro can be mounted upside down, but it will record it upside up, which makes it much more useful. (It was a pain to rotate with software in terms of time spent.)

I am def. buying 1 more for next year to plant on my helmet inside.
