It was a sarcasm. And the "other car" you see in my garage did use synthetic and it obviously wasn't 20 bux.

It's Castrol in a BMW container......

The service guy told me they don't use Mobil 1 anymore.

IIRC, there was a thread on this topic earlier. I believe e90fleet mentioned that the N52 engine requires a newly certified longlife synthetic oil that currently only BMW has in North America. Maybe Mercedes has it also.

So, don't substitute non-BMW Castrol or Mobil 1 synthetic as they currently don't meet the requirements yet.

That's crazy. Tell them others are doing it for $89 (was quoted the exact price from two dealerships in the area here). Oil and filter change is what you want, not "oil service".

I think I will mention to them the prices that I have been hearing here on the boards. I talked to some of my friends and they say it's just expensive here in the bay area, Cali.

For 25 bucks, you ought to be able to pour radioactive raw sewage in one end and get chilled Perrier© out the other. Sheesh!

If you were to have the dealer change it @ 7500 miles, would you still be able to get the free service at 15000 miles, or would it be at 22500 miles?

But remember to tell the SA NOT to reset your computer, if you're paying for an early oil change. He should know.

E90Fleet was referring to the BMW Long Life (LL) 01 specification, which requires an oil with a HT/HS of 3.5 or more. The BMW 5w-30 also meets this requirement as the A3/B3 specs it meets requires a HT/HS of >3.5.

However, there is no need to use such a thick lube in this application...any shear-stable, long-life, 5w-30 synthetic with at least a HT/HS of 3.1 is acceptable and has shown to provide good wear in daily driving conditions. Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w-30 is a good example. Remember that BMW considers the regular Mobil 1 5w-30 as an acceptable substitute for the BMW 5w-30 oil.

In addition, the LL-01 approved Mobil 1 0w-40 is very overrated. One may think that it is significantly thicker than other oils such as Mobil 1 5w-30 (EP or not), but this isn't true. Mobil 1 0w-40 starts out in the mid-14cst range with an HT/HS of 3.6cp, but shears rapidly during use to a 11.5-12.5cst oil within 5000 miles, and the HT/HS drops to 3.1-3.2 consistently...thus, its has little benefit over a stable 5w-30. Mobil 1 EP 5w-30 would be a better choice as it starts out at 10.6cst (based upon the Virgin Samples I've seen), and thickens slowly during usage but does not thicken out of grade significantly like the BMW 5w-30 does...the M1 EP 5w-30 also has a longer service life due to its higher TBN. (Generally)

Its all out of pocket costs here in Italy. If my car was in the states then I could use the standard warranty: 4 years/50,000 miles

12-years/unlimited-mileage against rust and corrosion.

Scheduled service is not included in Europe.

225 Euros for a (LL04) oil change at BMW Den Haag (Netherlands).

Update: The total came to 285 Euros (w/ Micron air filter).

My local dealer quoted $99 for oil change after my 4 years ran out. $115 at local indy shop using Mobil 1. Those over $200 quotes are exorbitant!

Local dealer wanted $105 to change microfilter ... look in the diy .. its SIMPLE! My cost - $26.95 for the filter and about 10 minutes of time to remove the old one and put the new one in.

I'm curious too - what's the difference between an oil change and oil service?

So I think it's safe to assume that "oil service" not covered under maintenance is a HUGE profit center for the dealerships. How much do you suppose BMWNA pays them for the ones that ARE covered? I'd be surprised if it's much more than $35 USD.
