My first oil change is after 12k KM, is it a break-in change?

Its weird just noticed that my first oil change is in 12,000 KM = 7500 Miles . That is what the computer is showing me. Well have to see after teh first service if they revert back to the 25,000 KM interval . Will ask my dealer.

On another note yesterday and the day before I drove the car while it was 49 C, it was really hot and the Oil Temp was still at 110 C

talked to the dealer and they said it seems that I'm going to have free oil changes every 12000KM (7500 Miles); the SA said that BMW has some cars set to 25000 intervals and some to 12000

Consider yourself fortunate if you get them every 12000km. As far as I know, everyone in the US is 25000km, give or take a little bit.

It may be because of your environmental conditions. I've been to Jedah and damn it's hot there.

OK, I bought my 2012 135i with 6K miles. In looking at what the computer says, looks like my first oil change is at 9k miles. I now have 9.4k on it but no warning light yet. How does it appear? Is it an icon and what does it look like?

The computer's service info gives the miles remaining (and/or due date) to the service. Does it now say -400 for the oil change?

No, it doesn't show that. When I scroll thru all the 'service due' menus, it says oil 9000 miles. Since the car now has 9400, I was expecting it to notify me somehow every time I put the key in the ignition, but nothing. My wife's Acura drives you crazy very time you start the car once you hit that initial warning.

As I said, the service mileage figure is MILES REMAINING UNTIL service.

So you aren't due for a change until (approximately) 18,000 miles on your odometer. By that time, the computer will have counted down to zero and you will get the warning. But you should probably schedule your service when you are below 1,000 miles or so - check with your dealer to see what their exact policy is.

BTW, a CBS change interval of 18k miles is perfectly normal and indicates you are not spending much time in traffic.

From the owner's manual:

"CBS Condition Based Service
Sensors and special algorithms take the different
driving conditions of your BMW into
account. Condition Based Service uses this to
determine the current and future service
requirements. By letting you define a service
and maintenance regimen that reflects your
own individual requirements, the system builds
the basis for trouble-free driving.
On the Control Display, you can have the
remaining times or distances for selected maintenance
tasks and any legally prescribed dates displayed"

As some folks feel that 15,000+ miles is a bit long between oil changes, many of us have an "Interim" change (not covered under the 4 year/50k maintenance) around 7,500 miles or so. This generally costs about $100 at a dealer.

Also, if the dash computer has not called for a mileage based oil change within one year, you are entitled to a free annual "low mileage" change.

I think heat of 49'C would constitute "severe driving conditions"! Normally that's BMW speak for saying you should be doing your services more often. I doubt they would pay for those "extra" services though.

Back in the days when the customer was paying for services... these "severe driving conditions" would not only be high or low ambient temps but also things like driving mostly in "stop and go" city driving conditions. IF it were my car I would be changing the oil more often. IF your just leasing it and gonna turn the car in... I guess you shouldn't worry about it.

Over here in Germany, we rarely see heat above 27'C! Most of the time we see average summer temps in the 14'C to 24'C range. Heck I use my heated seats until late June/Jully!

Thanks Tom, I guess I was in shock that it would actually let you go 18K before an oil change. I don't think I can make myself wait that long, I'll have to get an interim change or see if they will do it after one year in service for free (which is July in my case).

Yep. When we are paying, then almost anything is severe. But if they are paying, then you can wait one year or whatever miles.

There is at least one poster on one of the forums who changes only at the CBS mileage (he averages around 17k) and now has something like 170,000 miles on his car (not sure if it an E46 or E90) with no problems, and I've yet to hear of any engine issues proven to be the result of the longer change intervals.

So I would have your oil service done in July as it should be free. Since some of the US BMWs have the computer programmed for a time interval of two years rather than one, your dealer may balk at doing a one year change. If so, simply show them the page in your Warranty/Service manual which specifies a yearly change.
