Bad alignment?
So I noticed last week or two weeks ago some uneven wear on my tires. When washing the car today I noticed it had gotten much worse.
Currently the front left is the worst (see picture below). There is some slight uneven wear on other tires, but nothing this drastic. Is this a result of living next to a cloverleaf exit, or a bad alignment? (Note the car doesn't pull and stays straight mostly) Thanks! |

Is that the inside or outside edge of the tire?

+1. Looks to be the outside (facing the tire from the front of the car). Seems pretty typical for a stock setup. The OP should consider adding camber plates to add some neg. camber. In the unlikely event it is the inside of the tire consider yourself lucky... Someone has already installed camber plates on your car. Just dial out some of the neg. camber before replacing the tires. On the street, I get even tire wear at neg. 1.7 degrees (and zero toe in/out) but you can't get there without camber plates.

Sorry looked at the picture on my phone. Was hard to tell.
Camber plates and some solid neg camber is the cure.

Check your steering wheel while driving. Is it dead center when you are driving straight?

The wheel is straight and the car drives straight.
Yes, this is the outside of the front left tire only. The rest of the tire isn't even near the wear bars, which seems odd. The more I think about it the less likely it seems it could be from aggressive right hand turns as I don't think I do them enough for this type of excessive wear. I guess I'll look at new front tires, camber plates and an alignment to get the full mileage out of my tires from here on out. Thanks all |

So after an alignment by BMW and new tires, I've noticed the same issue up front. What are good camber plates to get, or should I just remove the camber pin and have some more negative camber dialed in that way before buying plates?
Sadly the rear tires have the exact opposite problem with the inside wearing out too quickly (I assume due to negative camber). Any idea on fixing that, or am I just SOL here? |

Then, if you drive fast on soft tires.... What are those tires? Before you just throw mods at the car, you need, not just an alignment, but to know what your camber and toe is, on each wheel individually. It's possible something is bent. And improper toe can destroy tires faster than camber. Last edited by 128Convertibleguy; 09-07-2014 at 07:48 PM.. |

The tires currently are BFGoodrich g-force t/a KDW. I like them for their wet and dry traction as well as hydroplaning resistance. I just need something that lasts a bit longer as these get very noisy when getting low on tread.
I do toss the car through the corners when I can (why I bought it), but nothing like what most enthusiasts do so I dont think that is a significant factor. I have never hit anything, but I can't speak for the previous owner. I'll get a spec printout after the new tires are on before getting an alignment. |

An alignment/suspension inspection from a reputable shop will tell you what's up. Doesn't sound like it's your driving style. Other than Bilstein's I'm stock, w/ -.5 front,0 toe and -1.5 rear, 1/16 toe in. Nice even wear, works fine for the street and light autoX.

bringing this up again. Noob question, but I just want to be sure...
Will I need an alignment after installing nonadjustable camber plates?
