Can someone tell me what this alert means?

Means "Drivetrain malfunction – if on, this light shows that the drivetrain has been damaged and the car needs to be serviced as soon as possible."

It could also just be a battery issue or crankshaft position sensor going bad.

Here's a picture from an old 90's BMW though that says automatic transmission issue:

I don't... What are my options? The alert doesn't stay on all the time, it just pops up every once in a while. I just bought the car a couple months ago.

My guess is a transmission fault of some kind.

The yellow (warning) color is a good sign. It the fault came up in red you would probably not be able to drive it.

This may help. Here is a link to what appears to be a BMW document listing codes and indicator lamp icons for the E90... including the icon you are seeing.

Definitely related to the transmission. Better get it checked out.
