bump in hood normal?
While detailing my car the other day with Zaino for the first time (pain in the ass, but well worth it) I noticed that there's a bump in my hood. It's located along the curve on the hood, driver side, probably 1ft up from the headlamp. At first I thought it was caused by the way the paint was reflecting the light differently, but I could feel the slight bump when I run my hand over it as well. Just wondering if this is normal? Does anyone else have this bump?
And speaking of detailing my car, today I parked in front of some grass at work, and I guess the gardeners kicked up some dirt onto my hood. I noticed it during lunch.... but couldn't do much, since I live 30min from home. As soon as I got home, I washed and attempted to buff it out, but now it left a bunch of spots where the dirt used to be! It doesn't feel like it ate through any layers of paint (I hope), and I did just freshly put 3 layers of zaino on it. I'm scared that it was fertalizer that was thrown onto the car, and it might've eaten through the clear coat. Could anyone give me some suggestions on what to do? I just hope that the spots are caused by some reaction to the zaino, if so I just need to figure out a way to remove it. Any help would be appreciated!! EDIT:: Just tried to claybar the car to remove spots, but made no difference. I'm still hoping that this is just a very bad case of water spots, but I'm running out of options, and this has really put a downer on my day.... Last edited by dejav0o; 05-02-2006 at 11:51 PM.. |

Fertilizer would not do any damage unless it was wet or was on the car for a long period of time or the car was in the hot sun. It was probably grass and dirt that was kicked up by them mowing the lawn. Sounds like you need to find a new place to park at work. I have the same problem. I’m either under trees, near the lawn, or in the parking garage next to other cars  But Zaino is supposed to be the best. If you have damage from this, after just applying 3 coats of Zaino, I would be looking for a new product. Good luck |

Well, whatever it was on my car it must have been pretty potent. I assume it was wet at the time when it landed on my car, since even the run marks from the water got embedded onto the hood. It was underneath the sun most of the day yesterday, but I still don't believe it could've damaged it that much.
I'm going to try the vineger/water trick next, and if that doesn't do it, maybe bring it to a professional detail shop to see what could be done.... argh!!! And i know this thread is wothless without pics... I tried to take some, but the water marks don't come out in them. Maybe if I try again in the sun it might work out better... Does anyone know about the bump in the hood though? |

The bump isn't normal, I would say. You could try a clay bar on your hood to remove the water spots. And then re-zaino.

After a week of taking it around to dealers to get it inspected, here's what happened.
Took it back to Weatherford BMW (Berkeley, CA) and they offered to take care of it for free. The bump was easily handled by a paintless removal specialist. They still couldn't figure out what caused it in the first place. The water stains on the hood was removed using some mild polish. So in summary, everything turned out ok, and my hood is looking slick again. The manager of the body shop at Weatherford even offered to call around to some shop closer to where I lived so I wouldn't have to drive so far to drop off the car. But in the end I took it back to him since I knew he would've done a good job. I think out of all the shops I've been to, the Peter Pan BMW dealer was the worst service. Stevenscreek BMW was helpful and offered to look into it for free. Weatherford was just top notch! |
