Here are my new (old) winter wheels. They are old Moda R6 wheels that I bought in bad shape for cheap and then had them powdercoated. You can still see some imperfections under the coat, but that's ok.

You can see how much the barrel swings in... so these certainly wouldn't clear a 135's brakes, though it did work on the 128.

They did turn out a little bit more gray than I was hoping, but they aren't as flat gray as they look in the pictures. I was hoping for more of a gunmetal, but oh well.

I will post some more pictures once they go on the car in a month or so.

Just came back from Hogan Tire in Woburn where I had Blizzak WS60s put on my winter wheels. LM60s were not available in 205/50/17 so I had to get the less sporting tire, although they're supposed to be better in snow & ice - and that's the point, isn't it? As expected, steering feel and response is somewhat reduced but the ride is smoother (not runflats). Cost was $775, complete. Now I'll put one of my summer tires in the trunk as a spare along with the BMW jack kit from LeatherZ ($145 plus S&H). By the way, the jack kit is a quality piece! Especially the lug/torque wrench.

I just installed the 205/50-17 Michelin X-Ice Xi2 on Sport Edition A7 wheels that I got from Tire Rack. I installed mud flaps and changed the oil and filter at the same time.

A little anti-seize compound on the lug nuts, the face of the rotor, and on the hub works wonders.

Well, I thought I would have been the first, but the shop could not get the run flats off with their machine to mount my winter tires on! I couldn't believe it. have to find some other place now, oh well.

The new Michelin X-Ice Xi2 tires feel really slippery compared to the P-Zeros. I hope it improves a lot when I get some miles on them.

I'm planning to order the Dunlop 3Ds from Tirerack and get them installed in early November.

Those in the Boston area may want to check out Direct Tire. I have found them to be good, and they can get other tires like Nokians if you are interested. They may be willing to match the Tirerack price as well, though I haven't tried that. When I bought my General Exclaim UHPs from DT, it was comparable to what the Tirerack price would have been after shipping & installation. Plus you get free flat repair and stuff like that... which may include free winter changeovers though I am not sure.

My new NT05s came from Discount Tire Direct. They price matched the the best price I could find. Ended up saving about $40 per tire. Shipping was quick, too. Mounting can be done at their local stores. I also think you can have the tires shipped to a local store instead of your house.

I put my Michelin X-Ice Xi2's on last week. It was very cold last week in Toronto, definitely below the range you should driving on the stock 18's.
Unfortunately, as sometimes is the case, there's going to be a warm spell over the next week or two which means I may have been a bit early. Next year maybe I'll hold off until November...you just never know when it will snow around this time of year and I hate waking up having to go to work with the summers on fighting in the snow.

Winter tires are good up to about 55-60F. So as long as a warm spell doesnt turn into a heat wave you should be good.

Well now that they are on, after the sporadic snow and freezing temperatures, I guess the 70 degree heat from today will help break them in quicker? Haha, oh well, at least now I am actually looking forward for it to get cold. First impressions with the Dunlops are not a louder ride at all or a complete squishy feeling to the ride but simply less harshness over bumps and imperfections...definitely a nice improvement! The warm temps and the brand new tires that havent been broken in lead to some tendency for the DSC to kick in under harder acceleration with any steering input for now, will see how that changes after a few miles.

I am also very happy with the work done at Auto Engineering in Lexington. The shop was very professional, the mounting looked great, they used nice wheel balances (not the iron-age blocks from the factory) and so far the balance appears to be spot on.

Blizzak WS-60 very squishy

Took away all of the steering feel and much of the steering response - thinking of exchanging for the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D. This is my first RWD since 1983 RX-7 so I went for maximum snow and ice control. But what good is that if I don't enjoy driving my car (DD) for 5 months of the year? I have a 55-mile round trip commute from Andover to Boston. Interested in opinions of the Dunlops - good enough for NE winter? Thanks.

Not me, I will switch them over on the first inch of snow that sticks.

I switched em over about 3 weeks ago...Front tires on my summers were bald... Also have an 8mm spacer in the back to make them really aggressive. Ill wait till we get consistant snow to add the 200lbs of sand...
