I have around 20k on my factory tires and the rears are just about shot - I am thrilled with how long they lasted!
Depends on how/where you drive, I suppose. I do 20-30k in highway miles every year, and until I started the regular track visits, I was getting a LOT more than 20,000 miles out of my tires. Probably closer to 50,000. Like I said, I got 22,000, with five track days in there, and even then, the tires didn't need to be replaced. They were just too far gone to survive another track day. If I didn't have that scheduled, I would not have been shocked to see them last to 30k.

My brakes were also good for double (or more) what people seemed to be reporting.

ANY BMW with a sports suspension will only get 12K to 20K miles out of a set of tires.

Yea... a Golf will get 50K out of a set of tires.., but thats not a high performance car like a BMW is.

ZHP. Pilot Sport. Highway driving. Easily double those estimates.

Just checked with Discount Tire, and confirmed 45,000-ish miles on my last set of Pilot Sport (on the e46) and about 35,000 on some Falkens that I tried before the current Hankooks. The Falkens had a couple of track days on them, and we replaced them right before my wife started taking the e46 to the track. They had some tread life left in them, but they were noisy and I think two of them had broken belts (or some sort of pothole damage), from the low speed "whump-whump-whump" noise they were making, so we replaced them before her track day.

Highway driving will always yield significantly higher mileage. It's not really a fair comparison to a car that's driven around town and on curvy roads.

My point exactly. People seem to be assuming that everyone else drives the same roads, and should get the same life from their tires. I don't think the OP, or most (any?) other posters specified, one way or the other.

You have 225/255 sizes right? I wonder if sticking with 215/245 Pilot Super Sports would maintain responsiveness on our 7.5/8.5 rims?

Yes. I did not think Michelin made the PS2's or PSS's in 215's. ?

By slight loss of turn-in "response" or "steering crispness" - when going from RFT to regular tires... its not so bad - but noticeable. Basically with the RFT's when your doing say highway speeds, and you turn the steering wheel say 1/4 inch - the car WILL turn in quickly. With regular tires... I'd say you have to turn teh steering wheel maybe 1/2 inch to get the same kind of "turn in" feel or response. I still would not go back to RFT. I really LOVE my Michelins.

I didn't notice any degradation in steering when I switched. I did notice a feeling that the rears might break loose sooner than with the run-flats on a sharp turn under hard acceleration, but it might have been my imagination. Wet traction has definitely improved.

The most noticeable thing was the ride - I no longer feel every imperfection in the road and I no longer fear pot-holes like I did.

Again, I've had three flats with my "run-flats". The RFT's are very tender, expensive, and not commonly available (in our sizes). If you're stranded away from a BMW dealership, you will be in trouble. Even the dealerships don't always keep our sizes in stock. Imagine getting stuck in some small town while on vacation while you wait for the dealership to get the right size tires in.

The biggest issue in my mind is that our cars don't have a lot of room for a spare. A pump, patch-kit, slime, etc. won't get you out of every situation. I bought a donut spare but am giving up a lot of trunk space to have one.

BTW, all these topics have already been discussed and debated at great lengths in the wheel and tires forum.

Had RFT on my car for about 5000 miles before switching to Yokohama ADO8's. in 19"....Alway's wanted a sticky tire with a nice tread design and stiff sidewall as not to loose any turn in...It was a good choice so far as i have put about 3000 miles now on the ADO8's with no issues and they seem to be wearing very well..But then again i do not do burn outs and drive fairly conservative..You have to in NJ...As mentioned in a few posts above..the roads here are HORRIBLE,POT HOLES EVERYWHERE, MANHOLE COVERS, BIG BUMPS AND CONSTRUCTION EVERYWHERE.....I do not go out driving anymore without hitting something bad on the road every day..it's nutz...It's like every time i get out of my car i check the rims and tires for damage.....so far one bubble on the RFT's and 2 rims replaced/fixed from bends from hitting pot friggin holes..not even deep ones but deep enough...Luckily i have a few set roads that i have figured out where the bad spots are and when driving in uncertain roads i just go slower....otherwise i will need a new rim or tire...But when it rains the pot holes fill with water and you can not see the them...low profile30/35/40 series tires are a issue in NJ....My DD Honda CRV with 160,000 miles on 65 series tires are whats needed...never any problems....how would a 65 series look and feel on a 135i LOL....only kidding. Get rid of the RFT's they suck and BMW know's it....BMW should do better with the tire selection for the 135i/128 as well as any car with the RFTs on..they are horrible and lack any grip on a road that is bumpy ......
