I have been pushing my trans for about a year now.
FBO+Meth on 93 I made 401/433 - Ran this daily for about 6 months
FBO+Meth on 109 I made 433/473 - Ran this at the track 3-5 times

Now I am running FBO+Meth on a E85 mix. I have not put the car on the Dyno yet with E85 but I have to guess it to be around 420/450 area and have been running this for the past 4-5 months.

From what I have seen, it looks like the bigger issues start to poke through once you go with a turbo upgrade and run 500+. I still think that this trans can hold 500+ as long as the boost is controlled well post shift so it does not take on all 500 at one moment.

Your 6AT should be fine with mod-ing. I would recommend you change your trans fluid and filter though. BMW says its "lifetime fluid" but the folks who build the trans... ZF say to change it every 45K miles. Here is a place in CA that offers alot of service kits and info on these trans...

To be honest I haven't noticed much difference in the shifting even after all the mods. But the steptronic is fast already so no worries.

To make any auto trans shift faster... your gonna need a different "valve body" for the AT. Those guys in CA probably know what to do. Athough I am not sure IF they offer an package like that. The solenoids in the valve body need upgrading. Maybe even a different stall speed for the Tq converter too.

I think just about everyone here just runs the OE setup. Maybe they change teh trans fluid. But thats it. And there are a lot of guys here with autos and FOB's(full bolt on's),,,

58k Miles. 45k of those modded. I drive my car hard including several track days. No transmission problems, ever.

JB4 has nothing to do with your gearbox, regardless of what map you have it on the gearbox will operate the same. With a tune+intake try map5 auto tuning, see how the car feels and log if anything doesn't seem 100%. You should have absolutely zero issues with the step trans until you start pushing serious torque with upgraded turbos (RB, Vargas, Shiv/FFTEC, etc), it's a pretty robust setup. Let's put it this way, of all the various expensive parts on our cars, the trans is about the last one I worry about. Like Dack and others have said, we have many members here who are FBO running well over 400 wtq with meth and/or e85, they don't really have issues with the trans holding up or slipping. Mod away!

I wouldn't worry about the transmission until you upgrade your turbos.

You should have zero problems up to about 400 hp maybe much more. I know I was speaking with my BMW service guys about car today, mine has the BMW Proformance pack on it, they said the pack has more of a punch for autos than manual and this was because the auto can handle more which I thought was backwards generally speaking. They explained the clutch is sufficient for the stock setup and then some more but the auto is more than sufficient for stock and much more. This is totally backwards for most cars but for the 135 it is not,,,the stock power kit boost trq to 332 auto and 317 manual

This explains why my friend who is pushing 455 through his manual went through two stock clutches before he finally put a racing one in,,,no problems since,,,

Well everyone says the DCT starts slipping around 400, but I've yet to see one thread with concrete info regarding how much the older 6-speed plain auto can take.

I've seen both opinions... To be honest, you are not doing harm if you are changing the oil, so if you have concerns then do it once in a while.

The DCT can take less than the old steptronic. I think Terry of BMS confirmed this. Terry has been running his car with a lot of power, for a very long time, and has been using it as a test mule for BMS products. If it can handle it for these past 4-5 years, I am sure that steptronic owners are fine.

There's some info about it here:

Ever since BMW started doing the no-cost maintenance, they claim that it is a "lifetime fill" meaning it never needs to be changed.

However, according to ZF (the manufacturer of the transmission), the tranny fluid has a life of about 100,000 km. I would change it every 75-100K km just to be sure. It really can't hurt.

Here is a DIY guide:

Hi There;
I got my automatic transmission serviced. 2008 E82 128i coupe. The Fluid was pretty dark and dirty with only 46,000 Km.(Kilometers) that's 28,750 miles. The new ATF fluid looks clear golden translucent colour. BMW Canada and USA says it's a lifetime fill. When you see for what the ATF should look like it's no wonder why owner's who keep their Bimmers have it changed. Seeing is believing. I plan to keep my car for at lest another 6 years.
