I needed an xi and I haven't heard anything about a 335xi so it doesn't effect me at all.

Unless you can't wait a few months to find out how this all plays out, I would wait.

I would say that 50hp is a significant boost to the 330's power. It would make your car even more enjoyable. Although I am assuming that BMW won't raise the cost to own the car either.

As I've said numerous times before, the 330i fully loaded is already seriously pushing the limit as far as price for cars in its category. If you were to raise that by anything significant, like more than a couple hundred bucks, I think they would be hurting themselves. Especially with such strong competitors as the IS350 and new G35 coming up behind them.

So, although I think it would be stupid for them to raise the price of the 330/335, that's not to say that they won't! People do thing that make no sense all the time.

Lux, don't be jealous of the people who MAY one day own an E90 with 300+ hp. Go on an awesome drive with your car right now and let them be jealous of you

I'm not waiting. Would wait if it was a body style change...but not engine. There was no devaluation on 95 M3 when 96 engine jumped to 3.2 (from 3.0) one year into production. Not really apples to apples, but still. Secondly, this car is for my wife & she doesn't need 300+ hp. Thirdly, knowing BMW, the hp increase will come with an additional 300 lbs in weight and the car won't be any faster anyway.

Just for the sake of reference, the E46 convertibles and coupes used the same badge lettering...completely different cars. My exact words were "As far as I remember there has always been a designation from BMW to differentiate the coupe from the sedan in the 3 series line." I made no mention of the convert. I know they use the same designation for different drive trains of the sedan.

It’s the coupe and sedan that always had different designations in the US. Maybe go as far to say the 2 door and 4 door vehicles of the same line had different designations in the past. This may change but there is nothing showing they would have a coupe (2 door) and a sedan (4 door) with the same designation in the same model line. So, my theory (after seeing the coupe pic with 335i designation) is the 335i may only be available in coupe form - at least initially for the first year.

But does it make sense? That would mean the only thing that is distinguishing the coupe from the sedan is the displacement. What engine is offered in the 6 series that isn't available in the 5er?

Great Thread! This is an AWESOME Forum. Everyone on this Forum is super. After reading through all the posts thus far, this is my opinion: I believe BMW will do with the 3 Series as they have done with the 5 Series. That is to say, they will have a 325i, 330i, and a 335i, and an M3, thus making a lineup that covers the U.S. market.

The Five Series has the 525i, 530i, 550i, and M5, which covers all bases of the U.S. market. Why would BMW do away with the 330i, and go to a 328 and 335, when the 5 Series lineup is not changing? To do so, in my opinion, would belittle the 5 Series lineup. I believe a 325, 330, 335, and M3 fits the U.S. market and BMW's competition perfectly; in fact, I believe that would one up the competition.

I don't think they'll keep this 335 engine, in whatever form it may be, exclusive to the coupe, at least not for long.

It seems that there is a tremendous market for the sportier, more powerful models, with the practicality of four doors. Which is why the M3 sedan is returning to the lineup.

I'm also not sure about the three models either. If the 335 ends up being a true performance-driven model, something along the lines of the previous ZHP (is that what it's called?), then maybe it ends up being an additional model.

If it's merely an engine upgrade, then I think it merely replaces the 330 - such an upgrade is fairly necessary due to competition from the G35 and IS350 (as others have already pointed out).

Then you have a 328 with 235 hp and a standard equipment list similar to the 325 (no power seats, HIDs, Logic 7).

The current 325 and 330 just seem sort of redundant to me. And, of course, the same could be said for the 5-series.

Right. 330i sedan is already 3400pds.
I don't think BMW is stupid enough to build a car that weighs 3700pds with 300hp and call it a sport sedan.

I agree...at least for 2 years. They may migrate the 330i to 335i sedan later but not before 2008 to make everyone (330i owners and 335i future owner) happy.

If you ask me everyone is part right. I think the 335 will cost more if you looke at the base price. Also I think you will get more options. Right now I would guess that a 330 after typical options is around 38. Well if the 335 was 40 but you got more options and more power then that would make for a good deal.
