Because if you have a 6MT you can't just swap the diff - the ring gear is welded onto the stock diff. There are many possible solutions, but they each have a good amount of Ka-Ching ($$) associated with them.

All 135i manuals and late model 335i manuals come from BMW with a welded ring gear. The solution is to replace the entire final drive unit with a Quaife final drive, which is built from a brand new BMW final drive($2000) and Quaife($1450), plus seals, gasket, and labor.

We may be at the end of the road with 3.08 BMW final drives as there aren't any to be found. We still have a few 3.46's left and do come across low mileage 3.08's once in a while.

Wow, this thing is great. It's been less than a week with the LSD and 3.46 final drive and I'm loving it. One unexpected benefit is that my exhaust drone is GONE. Seriously, I have no drone on the freeway at all anymore with my fully catless exhaust.

Just curious: do we get anything back if we freight our core final drive back to HPA? Mine is a 3.08 and I'm up in the air about going 3.08 or 3.46.

You will get a core refund on Quaife final drive exchange units.

About a 500 rpm increase and 1-2 mpg loss.
