Gas flap doesn't close

I noticed today that my car's gas flap will not close when it's pushed in. If I hold it closed and lock the car the lock will engage and hold it closed, however it seems that when I push it in the switch isn't registering. Could this be as simple as a bad switch? Is it going to be easy to replace?

Sounds like the spring loaded 'helper' (that presents the fuel filler door in an open state) won't reset, or latch when the door is closed. The reason it latches when you lock the door is that a pin is driven through a corresponding hole in the fuel filler door. See attached photos:

Here's a capture from realoem.com, the part is #4 and is $7.63 and looks to be an easy to medium DIY:

Yup, that spring loaded buffer stop doesn't stay closed unless I lock the vehicle. Guess I'll need a new one. Does the fuel surround just unbolt, or is it going to be difficult getting to it?

The dust cap of the offending part comes off and then it appears that you then have to release a couple of clips to remove it, slip the new one in and it's off to the races . . . maybe. You don't need to remove the entire filler apparatus.
