This is the worst factory cd player I have ever seen

I've had my car for about 3 months now, aand generally I love everything about it except the armrest, and the horrific cd player.

The cd player is so bad that I've listened to a grand total of maybe 3 cds since I got the car. I HATE everything about this cd player. It won't play any cd that has been out of the wrapper for longer than 15 minutes without skipping, it makes all sort of endlessly annoying high pitched squeeks through the speakers, and it's practically impossible to easily replace. It has already been replaced once by the dealership due to it's refusal to cleanly play any cd that has ever been touched with anything other than a clean-room suit, and the new one is exactly the same as the old one. Only roughly 10% of my cd's will play without skipping.

The car used to be my primary music listening spot, now I can't stand to turn on the cd player and would rather listen to whatever hair metal BS is on the crap local stations, and believe me I hate hair metal too.

Anybody else having the same issues?

Get an MP3 player... it's 2009 lol Once you try one, you'll never go back to CD's.

CDs play fine, but I am seeing some intermittent problems if I try to play a CD full of MP3s. I too would like to get an MP3 player (preferably 32GB, since I want to load it up with lossless files). Any recommendations?

The stock sound system in the car is pretty crappy... I guess I'm sort of an anal audiophile but it's true. Anyway, the 1 cd I loaded up with mp3's worked fine. Other than that I just use the aux-in or radio.

I do use an mp3 player sometimes, but I don't like the sound quality you get with them. Also, why should I have to use an mp3 player? That's not an acceptable answer. That's like my bosses saying that the fact that our new performance evaluation system at work is screwed up and actually favors the incompetents who never get assigned difficult work is OK because it's the same for everyone.

It simply is not acceptable for the CD player in a 35k car to be this bad. Period. Dot. End of discussion as far as I'm concerned. This thing is worse than you will find in a freaking TaTa.

Ummm, sounds like your CD player is broken. Make a service appointment and have it replaced for free. I used the CD player constantly when I first picked up my 135. The sounds and playback issues you are describing are not normal operation.

Go to the dealer, have this fixed.

Ask the dealer to play one of their CD's in your player - see what happens.

Already did, and the cd player was already replaced once, which was already stated. The new player does the exact same thing as the old one.

It skipped on one of the tracks at the dealership, so they replaced the player. Still skips on any cd with even minor scratching though, I use a case logic cd case, and all of my cds have very minor scratching from it. They play fine in every other cd player I have ever tried them in, but skip in the 135.

I should have known this would be a problem. The CD player is made by Alpine, and their error tracking is always horrific.

MP3's inherently have very poor high and low frequency reproduction. Cymbals are always off, with a weird phasing quality where they sound like they are getting louder and quieter. Bass is also very lacking. I'm a bit of a stckler about my sound. MP3s just don't cut it for me.

Sounds like you need them to replace it again is the point. Never had a problem with mine either and if your mp3 are sounding that bad, time to upgrade from something higher than 128.

heck with CD's - go vinyl

Not having a problem with my CD player, but I use my iPod more. Definitely rip at higher than 128, or use a lossless format. There's a thread around here somewhere on the impact of sample rates and lossless formats. Get a 160GB iPod classic and store your entire collection on it. Beats carrying around a truckload of CD's.

Another advantage to using an MP3 player: CD's can get damaged pretty quickly sitting in your car, especially in hot or cold climates.

But you say your an audiophile - get a USB turntable and play your vinyls.

Exactly...MP3 players can have great quality as long as you have the right format of music. (i.e. FLAC)

I never use any encoding except the highest available to me.

"Loss-less" does not exist, unless you are able to rip it to your MP3 player in a full WAV format, and then you just lose your storage space in no time flat. It's just a reality of MP3 that they are not as good as CD format for quality. You can't significantly compress a format without loss.

Anyone install an aftermarket CD player in their 135 yet?

It does this sitting still in the driveway. It's not related to impact resistance at all.
