I started having this problem with my car recently and today it got to the point where it wouldn't go back up and continues to just go up 1/4 of the way and go back down. It's also a rainy day here. If I take the key and lock it from the outside and roll the window back up that way it will go up 3/4 instead of 1/4 and still go back down. I've been leasing the car for 7 months and has about 6300 miles on it. I'm bringing it in for service sometime before the weekend. I get off work early on Friday so possibly Friday if I can't tomorrow since my dealer is a bit of a drive for me on a weekday.

Mine does this too. I am not sure if this is mentioned but it ONLY happens when the car is OFF. Leave the car running and you will never duplicate the issue so to me it does seem to be some type of voltage related issue.

My 2011's been doing this too. As I just posted in another thread, while booking my car in for first maintenance yesterday they told me there is a recall for battery replacement. I wonder if this could be related? Will see what they say.

Just got back from dropping-off the car at the dealer. Apparently the battery recall is to replace the original 70 AmH battery with a 90 AmH. The SM didn't relate this to the window issue at all so the battery is unlikely to be the cause. I'm thinking the battery recall may only apply to Canada and maybe parts of the northern US (cold weather climes). Mixed feelings about this recall because I never had any issues with the original battery and I'm sure the new one will be even heavier. They're going to look into the window problem too.

Picked up the car from the dealer after the maintenance and their attempt at fixing the window? . . . re-initialized and told me to "keep an eye on it". The very first attempt to close the driver side with auto-up and it does the same thing - big surprise. Funny how this problem seemed to be totally unknown to them given that there's supposed to be a TSB out for this with software update etc. Unless it gets worse I'm not sure when I'll bring it back in, but hopefully when I do they'll be a bit more up to speed on the issue.

This is my 3rd BMW in a row with driver's side window problems (E36, E46 and now E82).

It only happens to me when the window is fully down and I trying to leave the car and roll up the windows. Passenger side closes, but driver's side goes up half way and reverses.

It seems to take a handful of times holding the switch (not one touch) to close it.

It happens almost every time, but I've never tried to close it while driving. I suppose that explains how a software change would fix the problem.

I'm having the same thing happen to my driver side window. Going to the dealer today so I'll ask them to take a look at it for me.

My 08 had the bigger battery. It might only apply to newer MY.

They should know about it. It is a well known problem. They have to go thru the steps of software first, then motor replacement if the problem recurs.

Well, the 2012s do it too. My 128s passenger side window will go halfway up then goes back down. Will do that a couple of times then works fine. And this only happens every couple of weeks or so. Weird.

My car was doing this all the time esp. on the driver's side until I discovered how to stop it. I brought the issue up with dealer service and they were of no help. They said, "We must have worked that window up and down a hundred times Mr. Mechanical Know Nothing and it did not malfunction once. Oh, that's real nice.

When the windows are down, press on the down buttons again and you may hear a thud, the windows do not malfunction as long as I do this.

Our cars or any BMW with the frameless window does down about 1/4 inch when you open the door, and goes back up when you close the door. The problem is that, overtime, the "gap" that the window goes down when you open the door gets smaller and smaller, and eventually there is very minimal gap. (I do not know how to eliminate this "reduced gap" from happening, maybe BMW engineers can fix this). This is when the problem happens, the window is at the maximum position. And if you try to close the window, it will bounces back because it hits the limit.

Now, all you need to do is...roll down your window with the one-touch function, and once the window stops, you will see that the window is not fully in the door (a small amount of window left, this happens only when you have the "window bounce back problem"). Now push the window in with your fingers and roll up your window back up with the one touch function...and wala...you just re-set the window minimum position and the problem went away.

I have this happen many times. I now just prevent the problem from happening (when I notice the "1/4 gap" gets smaller) by doing a fully opening/closing window cycle. You don't need to push the window in with your fingers, only needed when you encounter the "window bounce back problem". Works everytime... I think some people never experience this problem because they fully open their window at least once a day. And as soon as you do this, it re-sets the window position. Personnally, I hardly open my window at all, that's why I have to do the reset from time to time.
Well, just happened to glance over and did notice passenger window was not all the way in door, maybe 1/8 inch out. Reached over , pushed in down then raised it as you suggested. Well, now it goes all the way in door as it should and so far no halfway up and then going back down. Your trick seem to work. Thanks
.

I'm having the same issue with my car with the windows rolling 1/4 of the way down. The annoying thing was that I didn't have the issue until 2 weeks after they replaced the window motor under warranty because they thought there was something wrong with my original motor. Now, just out of warranty BMW charged me for replacing some other component to attempt to fix the issue. Another 2 weeks later I'm getting the same issue consistently. Looks like i'll be needing another window motor and still not be guaranteed to fix the issue!

In the hope of helping someone, it may be the window rubbers/seals obstructing the window. The window is programmed to drop if it doesn't seat properly so I recommend running your finger around all of the seals in contact with the window in the door and car body to make sure that it's all pressed in correctly.

For reference I had this after I pulled my door apart to upgrade the speakers. Where I refitted to door trim the rubber seal had protruded slightly and causes friction on the window as it rolled up. I refitted the trim and the problem went away.

Stupidly I managed to do this again after removing the tweeter pod, I put the pod back in incorrectly and again it caused friction on the window. I refitted the pod and no problems.

Now I just don't a$$ about with my door trim...problem solved

So does anyone have a solution for this yet? I've had software updates as well, and no luck. This is driving me crazy, e93.

After several motors and software updates I haven't had a problem in 6 years.

Have had this issue.. I think it's a sensor issue.

Push the window down physically with some force to "re-set" it into place, and then it works fine for me.
