waste gate rattle experience?
Hi guys, what's the go with waste gate rattle fix in australia? Mine's getting louder recently and want to take it in before warranty runs out.
From reading the US threads, they either do a software fix to mask it or replace the turbos. Anyone had any experience on BMW AU's approach to this issue? |

Pull off the vacuum line to the WG while the engine is idling and then rev it up. IF it stops, your WG's are bad. There are videos on YouTube on how to test for this.
I know these SIB's are only for the US cars... but they might help you out...

ansch - Are you running a tune (JB4, PROcede, COBB etc)? I know you can adjust various wastegate settings to reduce the rattle but it isn't successful in all cases.

Alpha - What did you end up doing? Replace wastegates (does BMW have a later part number (superior design)? or RB turbos :P

No tune, all stock and it rattles like a snake.. taking it in today. Will report back what they say/ do. I rather they don't "fix" it via software as i really don't want more lag. Although the TSB that Dack posted said something about 135i's are not affected by this turbo lag issue.

OzJustin, nothing done about it yet. Gonna try one more time when the car is being serviced at Advan soon through the JB4.
RB turbos lol not yet hahaha BMW said that i can't be sure that its WG rattle and they have to run it up on their 'special computer and dyno' which loads up each turbo individually and under different circumstances as well.. $198729893247862934786 later... i dont think so, no thanks. I know WG rattle when i hear it and the symptoms. |

So took it to the dealer today. Said there is a noise, I think it's the wastegate, did some reading online etc.. SA gave usual bs about WG doesn't rattle, 99% of stuff online is false, US cars are different.. blar blar blar. Got tech to go out with me to the car, rev a few times and noise is there, tech said yup.. WG noise.
Anyway, apart from the typical SA frustration, they adjusted the actuator of the bank 2 turbo and the noise is no longer there. No notice of any more lag than before. Will see how long this lasts. Why is it so hard to find a good SA? Ironically, I recognised this guy as soon as I walked in, he used to be SA at a certain crap VW dealer in brisbane and I had the same attitude from him about the DSG issue which was not an issue, but now there is massive recall. /rant |

Has anybody bothered to buy the Vargas rebuilt? turbo with the upgraded WG?
Reading around the forums, people who have had their turbos replaced under warranty in the US have had the rattle come back even with the newer part numbers. |
