hey all
my 2010 135i got its turbos replaced by Rallye BMW back in June for wastegate rattle under warranty. (my car was already out of cpo warranty at this point) and last week, i reinstalled the downpipes. and now i can hear my fresh turbos rattling perhabs even louder than they ever did with my old turbos. (didnt hear anything before downpipes. already has midpie n axleback) previously, it was only rattling on decceleration, and now i can hear the rattle on cold start, decceleration as well. im getting tired of this. anyone got any solutions? should i just take the car to the shop and tighten the actuator rod? or put the oem downpipes back on and mask the rattle and pretend its not there? lol any real suggestion is appreciated. |

Read through it and the comments. Since you have new turbos, and assuming the waste gate actuators were replaced, it sounds like the adjustment wasn't dialed in properly. If you still have the old actuators, try adjusting and eventually replacing with new ones

so i should just adjust them manually?
im reading two different things. Mr.5 solution is to tighten them (turning the rod away from the engine while facing the car) and Hause's solution of loosening them. which one should i try? right now, mine rattles on cold start, and decceleration. |

Might just need some adjustment then. For direction, I'm assuming it's trial and error to dial it in, especially if new. Haven't done this myself yet.

yeah actuators were replaced with the turbos.
unfortunately, i cant adjust the rear actuator from top as e90 guys can. theres some intercooler piping blocking the view. however, i can touch the actuator rod itself and i can definitely wiggle it to make some metal noise which is the noise when they are rattling. will be taking the car to the shop that did the downpipes install to tighten them few rotations and will report back with results. |

Even though you're out of CPO warranty, the turbo's should have their own parts warranty seeing as they're new. Call the dealer and ask.

they definitely are under warranty if i go through with that route. but if its something that is easily tweakable, i rather do that since putting stock downpipes back on is pita

Tried from the bottom and discovered the same thing. I could get the wrench onto the nut, but it was on so tight, I had no room to apply enough torque to get it loose. All i got were cuts and scrapes all over my arms trying to fit them in places that I probably shouldn't have. Next time, I would probably try to take off the underbody, and passenger side wheel to maybe give me more room.

took off the underbody, and was able to access rear turbo waste gates without much of an issue. loosened the 10mm bolt and then tightened the actuator rod by 1.5 turns.
this significantly reduced the metalic rattle upon decceleration. there is some that remains, but not as bad as before. mechanic recommended to change the vaccume hoses and what not before deploying the same measure to front turbo wastegates. (since to gain access to front ones, both downpipes must come off). will update further when i change my vaccume lines. |
