yep. i dont want to upgrade to harsher pads without doing the rotors though.. seems a bit counter productive

Was it actual brake fade or just the pedal feeling mushy and you had to push down more? From my experience BMW brakes are very strong regardless of the engine.

Not necessarily harsher. You're not complaining so much about the braking performance (when they do work) but rather the degradation of performance when things get hot. So going to a pad with higher temp tolerance but similar abrasion level would let you have more fun longer
