Local pricing here in Toowoomba QLD is ridiculous. one place (Beurepairs) said the cheapest 235/35/19s they could get started at $650 per tyre. As soon as he said cheapest of $650 per tyre I laughed and said I was looking at some Kuhmo KU31s for $199 each and walked out...
I ended up getting some dodgy Hancook K104s for $165 each from St George Tyres in Sydney, which by the way are pretty average in the dry and next to useless in the wet, but what can I expect for $165 Anyway, paid $20 each for fitting from the tyre shop next to the girlfriends work (Garden City Tyre Plus), they didn't seem to have any problems with me bringing them the tyres to them. Any now I'm getting them to fit my new brake rotors, EBC pads and the new Koni FSD's, all up they want $396, including a wheel alignment. Toowoomba BMW wanted $500 just for the rotors and pads and another $700 for shockies. So their tyres are overpriced, but they're happy to still do work for me, which I'm happy with. |

This is all very interesting and there are some excellent points made by some well informed people. It seems that with a bit of age and brains (which most of the members here seem to have as opposed to other forums) you become made the victim when you find a better price.
The amount of times I've been made to feel like a know it all by some desk jockey that has no interest in his job is astounding. I've replied many times with "If it meant this much money to you, Im sure you'd have done the research too". I will be using tire rack since their prices are unbelievable compared to local retailers and if a local tyre retailer wants to harp at me about fitting them they wont even get an argument, I'll turn my back and head out the door before they've finished the sentence. They're tyre fitters AND suppliers. They FIT and SUPPLY tyres, and if they dont want the businesss of fitting 4 tyres then I dont want their service. Like someone else said, globalisation is leading to increasing competition which ofcourse drives prices down, it's 2011, diversify your business and get on the net like customers are. One question I have though, are we cheating any taxes when we get 4 x tyres delivered via international supplier, ie. from tire rack? |

Items under $1k are tax exempt so it's not cheating. You still pay tax on the service of fitting tyres locally. |

Ok, cheers. To better word my question, are we avoiding paying the taxes the tyre shop would normally have to pay...which the answer I guess is yes because they'd have to buy in bulk quantity which I'd imagine would be subject to some kind of tax by the sound of it. |

You'd be paying GST for local tyres.
If you for some reason feel that this country does not tax you enough and thus feel guilty, give that 10% to charity instead, they'll make better use of it! |

Just go to somewhere like Kmart tyre and auto. The guys in West Perth were super helpful and only cost about $50 from memory for a pair to be fitted, balanced. They have all the gear to put on and remove funflats if need be.

No, I was merely making suggestions as to why a retailer may begin to feel frustrated with the sytem.
