N54 noise

Hi everyone. This noise just starting coming from my engine the last could of days. Sounds weird, like something is scraping on the head. I searched the wastegate rattle noises but it\'s nothing like it.

Only happens on a warm engine, cold starts seem ok so far. It\'ll go to the dealer when I get back from work, but just filmed this in the car park before I left.

Any ideas would be appreciated, haven\'t posted in the engine forum yet, thought id see what u think here first.

Are you running a low viscosity oil? Like a 0w?

If so, the oil may not be clinging when the engine is warm and running quite thin when it heats up.

Just a stab in the dark

Wastegate bypass surging i'd say. Update to the latest procede firmware/maps if it just started doing it after an upgrade or install, otherwise the solenoids probably faulty.

Look for the place the vac hoses go to on the side 2 solenoids and feel them as the engine is running.

how many Kilometers do you have on the engine? I had to replace my VANOS solenoids at about 80K.

Its not had. Just lift off the plastic engine cover and they go in and out like spark plugs...save the oil piping to them.

Thanks for the input guys.

Andrew cheers, procede ain't a new install you put it on about 8-9 months ago, running v5 firmware. I did switch to valet and try but same result. Car has 12000km so it ain't seen much work.

Running standard BMW castrol oil which I believe is 5w?

Guess it'll be a trip to the dealer for warranty work when I get back.

+1. Or... the vacum line(s) have come off. I think I remember another post like this video(last year)... where it did end up being the two solenoids gone bad.

The oil grade you are using would have nothing to do with this type of noise.

0W40 is LL-01 approved
Yeah, but it may still not be clinging, especially if the oil is old. Filter may need checking too.

Also, 0w is not always LL01 approved.

Castrol Edge Sport 0w40 which is sold in Australia is not LL01 approved and also states "not for use in BMW petrol engines in Australia or New Zealand".

It is not the viscosity that achieves LL rating. It is the reaction to the sulphur content of fuels that are sold in Australia.

So don't just buy any 0w thinking it will be approved for our use, even if sold here!

Wonder if there's any actual difference to the old 0W40 or if it's just relabelled? Wonder if the "new" 10W60 I use is now LL-01?

Been looking into the procede firmware and maps, given it was a new one installed Jan 2011 im pretty sure it has the latest firmware and maps, but where is the up to date files kept? Ive checked the vishnu forums here http://vishnutuningforum.com/viewfor...c051a0cbffaba0 and the website downloads here http://www.procedetuning.com/BMW/n54...downloads.html ...

but i cant seem to find a copy of the user software v5.2 (as 5.3 is beta) and the 7-11 maps says only to be installed on the 5.2 software. Where are the latest firmwares kept? Ive check e90 post as well but come up trumps...

Im not at home to connect the Procede atm to check, but dont know if i should even connect with the 5.3 software?
