Finally had my 1M on the track -- video

This is at Oregon Raceway Park, fully stock except Mad Dad midpipe. Bridgestone RE11's in stock sizes, factory brake pads, fresh fluid.

This was my first track day in 7 years, but like riding a bike . . . I had FUN! It switches to a birdseye view about half way through which really shows the elevation changes. Insanely fun technical track. 2.3 miles with 16 turns, lots of camber changes and elevation changes to deal with.

That looks like a really fun track! Wish I had something like that nearby.

By the way, are you running the M laptimer app on the navi?

Yes, if I knew it would have shown up so well on the vid, I would have switched it to the g-force view. Otherwise those other views are pretty useless, way too busy driving to look at the nav screen!

How do you get the lap timer on your nav screen? I though it worked on the iPhone only.

Love the elevation changes at that track.

There is so much safe runoff space, I would be tempted to push my car even harder...

Nice driving and I like your fluid steering inputs!

That Mustang V8 sound from the car in the front in the first 3 minutes, is flooding your N54 sound ... ;-)

The app runs on the iPhone, but when the iPhone is connected to the USB port on the car it loads into "BMW Apps" and is controlled using the iDrive knob. That is how you start and stop the recording, and you can also toggle between displaying ///M logo, a G-force meter, or a track map. The track map is generated by GPS data, see you do not have anything to look at until you have completed 1 lap.

Thanks, I try not to saw at the wheel!

The runoff is great. The only danger is the final turn before the finish line with the wall to the left. It is off camber and yet a lot of spins seem to collect the car into the wall to the left. Unfortunately a Miata did that at this event, no one hurt but the car looked to be a total loss. This happened despite hearing all morning that it is a throw away corner. No one should be trying to push it there at a school event.

The mustang is a Miller Mustang (factory spec racer) and was on Hoosiers.

Hey buddy!
I'm in Portland and I go to ORP pretty regularly with the Palatov Motorsports crew. Grass Valley and that track are a lot of fun. I hope to catch you out there. I have never seen a 1M in VO in person.
Looks like you had fun!

LOL, I moved from Maine to Washington and was caught off guard by a lack of BMWCCA driving events out here. They average an event every 3-4 weeks all season in the northeast between 3 or 4 very active chapters. None of the PNW chapters do much in the way of HPDE. I started doing long roadtrips through the mountains (at legal speeds of course), then moved on to autocross for the past 3 years. I don't know what I was thinking . . .

Nice view of both track - which view would you choose if you have only 1 camera with you? I'm kinda weary about sticking my GoPro on the outside, and the ideal location inside is to make a custom mount from the rear dome light area dropping just enough to see.

If you needed a CSV file for your best session PM me... I have a very primitive utility to generate enough data for Dashware

I only had one.

I mounted outside on the windshield in the AM, then inside to the rear window in the PM. It is a lot easier to manage the camera when it is inside! For autocross I mount it on the inside of the windshield so it is easy to start and stop for the short runs, but I wanted the view from the rear so I can watch my inputs. Always learning!

Things to get for GoPro: 1) wired power kit (basically, USB powered cable right into the battery compartment) 2) new case that allows for external USB cables and 3) USB to 3.5 mic input. After that find a way to mount GoPro straight down from the rear dome light pod, power it from cigarette lighter and find a place to "drop the mic" to reduce/eliminate wind noise. Then I can just leave WiFi on and use the GoPro app to control everything. The M Laptimer already have steering input and throttle angle (but not exactly pedal position as the data shows MDM cutting in) and Dashware might be able to determine gear based on RPM vs Speed vs Throttle

Managing the power was a PIA, may be almost time for a new Go-Pro. It is easier when it is in the car within reach. When outside the car, you end up recording an extra 5 minutes for most sessions since it has to be started before leaving pre-grid.

As for sound, rigging up a separate mic . . . that would be awesome, but I don't think I am that motivated!
