RE-71R
This tire has been out for about a year but I haven't seen many reviews.
I'm running RE-11 in stock sizes, considering replacing with RE-71R or MPSC2. Not a daily, sees a few track weekends per year. Lots of canyon driving when I take it out. Who here could share their experience with the RE-71R? |

The RE-71R is my current go to street tire (265 square). Quick warm up, outstanding grip and predictability. The downsides being wear, road noise, and they don't stand up well to tracks days in 100 degree weather. I'd look at the MPSC2's if you don't have a second set of wheels for track work. They'll out last the RE-71r and provide better grip on the road course, just remember to warm them up before you start pushing the car hard.

I have been very happy with the 71R in 255F / 275R. On the street, they are sticky as hell from the moment I leave the driveway. They are very predictable and easy to control at the limit. I have only done 1 track day on them so far which was cold and wet, but still set better times than same track last year when it was sunny and warm on the RE-11's. Granted I also changed the FSB and added gobs of negative camber in front, so not comparing apples to apples.
I agree with the noise, but it is not as bad as my RE11's were near the end of their life. We'll see how it goes as they wear. I am not too concerned about treadwear since I only put about 8000 miles per year on the car. I have an autocross next weekend. I'll let you know how that goes. That will be a real test with timing and pax adjustments. Granted, it will also be my first autocross following the suspension changes, so I am expecting better times, but not all due to the tires. |

I have run these on my e36 m3 track car. I am on my second set and the first lasted me about 5 days on the track before there was some cording on the outside edge, not a great life span. By comparison I have gotten 10+ days out of Dunlop z2ss and Hankook rs3 on that car. The 71r has noticeably more grip than the z2ss or rs3 and as others have stated they require little or no warmup time. I probably will be going with nt01 next time on the m3 but I am considering the 71r (275/18 square) for the 1M once my current rs3's are finally dead. My 1m doesn't see much track time anymore and these will make great sticky street tires and occasional autox/track tires. I have not tried the Cup 2s but have heard great things and I like the super sports I have on the stock 19's (255/275).

I can't see getting more than 10k miles out of these with any kind of spirited driving. I'd bet they will run out of tread or cord before they heat cycle out.

Depends on the condition/tarmac of the roads you like and you're definition of spirited. I got about 600 miles with 1 track day from my last set of rears before they corded. However, I steer with the throttle and some of my favorite roads are like driving on 24 grit sand paper. My front tires look as if they are going good for about 1500. That's all canyon miles running with (more like watching them disappear) clapped out gen 1 mini's on RA1's, though. So mileage will vary....
But don't plan on a lot of life out them if your pavement looks like this: I've never seen a set of MPSC2 heat cycle out. Last edited by redux; 05-16-2016 at 01:50 PM.. |

Wondering if the PSC2 and 71R are just too soft and aggressive. I could just get a set of PSS and enjoy twice the tread life at much more than half the grip. |

What I appreciated about it was that they looked at the breakaway characteristics. As you can see some of the tires have close times but slightly different characteristics. All things being equal or close, I would get a tire with gradual breakaway instead of quick breakaway in the 1M since it's nature is already quick breakaway. Thanks again for posting! |
