Carbon Fiber wrapped hood...thoughts?

My Montego Blue vert has been used as my DD for three years and the 80 mile round trip highway work commute has made my hood look like a moonscape of rock chips. I get sick looking at it....especially after a day of detailing. The front bumper has taken some abuse also but not as bad. I've thought about getting both re-sprayed but the cost and concern about color matching has me waiting. As a temporary solution I was thinking about wrapping the hood with 3M's Scotchprint 1080 CF wrap. Apparently it's a little more glossy than Di-Noc. I know it's not everybody's cup of tea but I can't stand looking at my hood any longer.

don't do that.

CF is for weight savings in particular applications----to add an external wrap simulating CF is quite ricey and unnecessary.

I fully understand what the purpose of CF is for (and thanks for your opinion) though I would argue that the majority of people that do true carbon hoods are doing it for aesthetics anyway. I just don't have a spare $1,000 laying around.

I'd say no just because any big chips or scratches on you're hood will show through a wrap

get a real carbon fiber hood or don't do it. i will never understand the desire to put a 'fake look' to something and represent it as something other than what it is. It's like buying a nickel ring and painting it gold....but if that's in line with the ethos of your living, then do as you wish!

My ethos of living?????.....LOL, I beg your pardon.....my ring is tungsten and REAL carbon fiber. I got it for the weight savings.

Once again, I understand this topic brings varied opinions.

lol. so further evidence that if you wear a real CF ring...then you should buy a real CF hood. if you don't, then it's time to get the spray paint can and paint your ring GOLD!

It's your decision, do what you want. I believe Di-Noc has a gloss finish wrap now if I am not mistaken.

You'll catch a lot of grief from enthusiasts who will tell you you're falsifying the appearance because its not real, but to the regular every day person, they'd never know any different. Plus, it's your car, if it makes you happy, then you don't need much more convincing in my books.

A touch up usually isn't too bad (I paid about $300), and a reputable shop can usually color match pretty well (I had my whole trunk redone just recently and you'd never be able to tell), then you can purchase clear vinyl to apply to the problem areas to prevent chipping again, as an alternative.

Thanks.....eventually my plan is to re-spray and clear bra. I would have done the clear bra from the beginning but I bought the car with 5K miles and there were already a few chips there so I thought it would have been silly.

Really???

"ethos of your living" thats a little to much. if that guy wants to wrap his hood then so be it. His car his build. he was just looking for some input. Also are you running a CF hood on your car right now?

Unless your planning on doing some track time or some other racing event i can see someone getting a CF hood (weight reduction) but if not wrap it who cares.

I wrapped my hood. It is not easy but depending on the wrap you use it should be no issues. Contrary to posts above the chips won't show once you lay down the wrap. You also want someone helping you as one person needs to hold the wrap while the other is smoothing it out.

I more than most would like to have a real cf hood as the weight savings would help on the track, but being here in Germany the freight prices for shipping would be a nightmare ( $500 and up). In the end, I chose the" easy" route to cover the chips until I return to the states.

no i am not. because the Audis i have come with Aluminium hoods which are already light....pretty pointless to switch it to CF.

and hey if someone is looking for input...they should accept what others have as opinions. not sure why you are so upset about it. lol.

your right if someone is looking for inputs then the should accept them as they come. but a difference between being a D bag about it and putting it nicely.

Your responses seemed to be geared towards me wanting to fake people into thinking I had a real CF hood. That's not the case. Just looking for a temp solution to my rock chips.

i don't object to you wrapping it...i guess i just have never understood why people get CF wraps, that's all!

Temp solution is touch up paint.
Complete solution is respray hood or get a real cf hood.

I personally think a CF Wrapped hood does not look good. They look very cheap when done improperly. I have seen jobs with some wavy weaves.

I know you are just looking to fix your rock chips but you are just covering it up. The chips would still be hiding underneath the wrap. I would either leave the hood as is and accept the rock chips or do a spray / clear bra.
