Please Help Me Figure Out a Good Setup - CCW Classics
Hello, I am about to order new tires, and want to make sure of I have a camber issue, and not a bad tire combo......I have the below setup:
KW V1 CCW Classics Front: 18x8.5 et38 Rear: 18x10 et50 Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R Front: 225/40/R18 Rear: 255/35/R18 I did NOT get a camber adjustment (just installed the KW's and went on my way) which may have attributed to the problem. This happened, looks like it hit the coilover itself, but I could be wrong: Here is a shot to try and show that I dont think I was even that LOW....I wanted to go lower in front...if I cant that SUCKS!!! A good ass shot for fun: So....... I plan to get a good alignment, adjust camber etc and hopefully got a TAD lower in the front. Is this solely a camber issue? What tire combo is best? Do I get the same: Front: 225/40/R18 OR: 215/40/18 (fit front wheel??) OR: 225/35/18 OR 215/35/18 (fit front wheel??) Thanks, JB |

I'm running 19x8.5 ET37 up front with KW V2's and using 215/35/19 with no problem. But I also have some M3 front bits which give me extra negative camber. So I'd suggest you go 215/35/18 honestly.

or can I adjust for that? Keep in mind, I am stock camber, I made no adjustments for this wheel/tire/suspension setup. I am only 18 too.... do you still recommend I reduce both width and height? I thought'd that'd be over the top.. jb |

Ok so with this kit - http://hpashop.com/BMW-E82-90-92-93-...ms-e82-e9x.htm
I can run my current front tire setup - no problem? i.e. will this give more clearance between the wheel and the coilover (I can barely fit a finger if that) |

I coudln't tell you as I haven't done this yet...my arms are under the tree, and my tires (PSS 225/40/18 and 255/35/18) are waiting on my wheels. However, my thinking is that if anything it'd make it worse as negative camber would angle the top of the tire in toward the strut...no? What part of the coilover do you think you're hitting?

In thinking about this, I looked at your pics again...this doesn't make sense to me. The cuts on your tire are not on the side but on the top of the shoulder... Looking at this image (not a 135i though), that part of the tire would hit the fender liner before something on the strut that would make a cut like that.
Are you sure you're not hitting the front (or back) of the fender well/lip when you make a sharp turn?

Those tires look pretty well worn. If the tire was rubbing on your strut/perch/spring you would see and HEAR that. That just looks like a toe/camber issue with beat tires.

How many miles did you put on those tires to get them to look like that?

I had the very same problem, the purple ring on your suspension is cuting into your tyre every time you go over a bump, which is all the time,so I put a spacer on to clear suspension & now everything is on.............another way to find out, when your wheels are back on,try put your hand in arch & try touch the suspension & tyre, you will see how close they are...........hope you understand what I'm trying to say, good luck

you put a wheel spacer on? I cannot be sure I can afford to do this, as then I'll be dealing with fender clearance.
I was told when I bought these wheels from RWolfe - that they fit a 1 series properly. |

but im 18" your 19"....i still cannot believe this to be true.
I wonder if going to a 225/35, a 215/35 or a 215/40 will resolve the issue. |

Just a thought: on your next tire set put some red paint on the inside edge and go for a short drive. Then see if the red paint transfers to the fender trim or the strut.

It doesn't matter bout the size of the wheel,it's about how low your car is......do what ULRICHD said & put paint on the inside of the tyre & let us all know what the problem is....
I only suggested it was purple bolt on suspension because I had the same problem,my tyre wore down the very same as yours |

The KWs with conical springs allow for very little clearance and camber of any kind won't help this.
You are also running a lower offset wheel in the front than is optimal for a 1 Series with 8.5". This brings the wheel closer to the inside. The only thing you can do is to run a spacer 5mm spacer to see if that gives you enough clearance on both sides. You can run a more aggressive spacer but would probably need to create some more negative camber, depending on the tire. If you were running a 245 then you would almost definitely need the -camber but may not have the inside clearance required. More in depth, you can also replace the conical springs with 6", straight wound springs. You would wind the lower spring perch up to compensate for the shorter spring (is it shorter?). It seems a 5mm spacer with a 225 or 235 tire would work if you didn't wanna touch your springs. The camber from the lowering should help and you could take out your alignment pins which should give you up to another -0.5 camber for addition fender clearance. |
