The Vanos hub bolts come loose and fall out, they can jam up the timing chain and cause catastrophic damage. This is our third car with this issue be warned.

Shouldn't all affected cars have been contacted as part of the recall?
I was.

They should have been, but just because the part is recalled doesn't mean it's warrantied if the part fails outside of the standard warranty period and after the recall notice was given.

Yes true there Alex but the idea of a recall is to cover things which are inside and outside of warranty I.e. all cars with the defect. The other purpose is to replace it with a part that will not fail again, which in this case, it does. The bolt design was changed at some point in early 2012 hence why the recall didn't apply to every E-series N55.

out of interest, what is the resulting failure which occurs, what does it typically cascade on and damage - and what is the rough breakdown of costs? labor? parts? etc.

This issue is a recall world wide from BMW, The ower should of recieved a notice saying that it need to be resolve.
Outside of the warrenty period BMW Aust will cover it labour and parts free as its a defect/recall from manufacturer.

Otherwise take it up with fair trading.

Unless the recall has been done and the bolt has come loose I would see the dealership who done the repair.

Still never got the recall letter (July 2010 production N55). Might need to get it checked out independently some time...

You can always call your prefer dealer and ask to check whether your VIN is within the recall list.

Just had a call from a BMW rep, they must read this forum as BMW will now cover the repair under the recall even though its on its third owner and done 110,000km. This was not the case 3 weeks ago.
The owner is very happy.

Good on you Mr BMW
