The 1-series is a fat pig ...

... compared to the formula SAE car I tried out today Holy !@$% does loosing ~2800 lbs make a difference!

Here's to hoping BMW will remove at least a few hundred lbs from the next 1-series (fat chance, I know).

Garage List
From the specs I've seen its in the ball park with other small saloons ie circa +1490Kgs or there abouts. My old Evo IX GT allegedgly a lighter car was around 1400kgs , the old BMW 3 series compact was +1400kgs and the new Fezza 458 is supposed to be around 1400kgs too. Seems its hard to get below that figure without binning luxuries and resorting to expensive materials.
FYI my old Lotus Europa S was around 1000Kgs and that had the most minimal of leather seats and carpets.

Did someone say FSAE?

That is the CSUN '09 car. Faster than a racing kart around that track!

well they could be lighter but all this damn saftey equipment they have to put in them ties their hands I think. The only way around it is using light weight material that would drive the prices through the roof.

Safety first.. The added weight your complaining about may one day save your life.. Few member's on this forum can testify that the car will keep you alive in a major impact..

Anything is lighter than the Merc Mountaineer I came from. But hell its all about skill. If you know how to drive the SVT Mountaineer it is a hellaofallota fun to push.

+1 on the safety equipment. I got into a major crash with the vert last may. I came out with 7K worth of damage (new exhaust, new rear bumper cover, new rear bumper bar, new fibreglass trunk floor, etc) all really trivial stuff that is designed to fail. But at the end of the day, no airbag deployment on my car (no crushed crumple zone), and the car that hit me was a write off with a minimum of 15K worth of damage (his airbags did deploy).

This porker is more like a tank.

Airbags don't deploy if you are rear ended...they are designed that way. Unfortunately I know from experience as well. Sometimes it's nice to have a heavy German car around you

Its a safe car to get into an accident with. I know of a memeber who went 50mpg directly into a telephone pole with pictures and all.. (poor guy passed out on the way to work) car was totaled but he didn't have a scratch on him.

I'll take a sub 3,000lb car that will save my life...than a 2700lb car that could take my life.

Remember its not your driving skills you need to worry about its the other knuckle heads around you that could kill you.

Oh, the weight is absolutely due to the safety features and you wouldn't want to drive it on the street without them.

Don't take my comment too seriously. I was making a small joke by comparing it to what is essentially a 600cc sport-bike engine and a seat strapped to 4 wheels.

Similar to this:
(I can't find a decent picture of the one I drove so I'll just promote UofM instead http://mracing.engin.umich.edu/donate.htm ):
