E88 120i

Hi all, this is the first time I post in the 1addict forum.

Have been thinking upgrading my wife's cars for the last couple of months.

Thought about W204 C-class, used E46 M3, Mini Cooper S. But my wife only likes the E88 120i.

Most of the members here have the 125 and 135. Any experience and comments about the 120i?

One of my friend's mums drives one, and it's not too bad. I believe it misses out on a bunch of options compared to the 125i, the most important being a BMW I6 ENGINE It really did feel very sluggish around town, with the extra weight of the 'vert not helping much.

It all looks very similar from the exterior, but is your wife wanting a tonne of customisation? Unless you're going to go the 'povo-pack' route then I don't really think it's worth it in the end. Fork out a bit more for the 125i and some of the options become standard

Plus, I really think a 4cyl in a 'sporty' BMW convertible is a bit underdone. The 2.0L unit doesn't sound too pleasing either when compared to the 6's.

I test drove the 120i convertible in the lead-up to buying the 125i coupe. You have to test drive it yourself (and if at that point, you like it so much, and it's already fast enough for you, then go buy it and stop reading here) but it's imho a gutless excuse for a bmw badge. The chassis can handle so much more power and especially if you were looking at the M3 and the Cooper S, I can't help but think that you'd be lying to yourself if you thought the 120i was enough.

I believe chylld has put it perfectly.

Why on earth would your wife want to drive a 120 if the other cars you are looking at a much faster and probably better optioned????

I would choose any of the 3 cars you have mentioned any day over the 120. Vert or no vert.

I am guessing you like the power and she dosent care. hehe

My mum is happy as larry driving around in her 318 and reckons that it goes the same as my 135. hahahahaha

Well, you have got it spot on. My top choice is the Cooper S. But she doesn't like it!

But 1 coupe.... I have an E92 already...

So it is down to the vert....

Yep and what's wrong with that?

Faster than a 120 I bet and possibly better fuel economy.

Nothing, the 123d is an AMAZING engine

I was guessing the reason for the 120i was the price.. and the 123d is dearer than even the 125i.

i drove the 120i myself and found it way too sluggish, the extra weight from the vert components does not help. Definitely have to go with a 123d or 125i.

If you want a vert, why not go for the E46 330Ci? There are heaps of those around and now that they're all a few years old, they should be coming down into the range of the 120i, but you get the 6-cylinder engine...

120i vert is fantastic.... my MRS has one. The inside is almost identical to the 125i. The outside is Identical except from the badge (correct mr if im worng) .... but yes it a little sluggish..... other than that it is a GREAT car n i highly recommend it.

I am pretty sure They also make 118d vert now (2010 model) maybe check that out.....?

I'd say to just get whatever your wife wants, save yourself from a lot of problems!
I'd go mini cooper s over 120i, if it's a vert too, otherwise the 120i vert for its looks and not performance.

got my wife a 120 vert last month, fully optioned, paid 66 all up. she drove he 335 vert for about a week before deciding that it wasn't for her. i drove the 120 a few times and in all honesty it feels fine, and hers has about 200 kms only so it should still free up with time.

in any case the point is dont listen to anyone moaning here but take her to the dealer and get her to drive it, ultimately thats all that matters.

I've driven both the 120i vert and the 118d vert and the diesel feels much quicker and stronger. The 120i is a really gutless engine and I'm frankly surprised BMW are still offering it alongside the diesels. Even a 116d feels quicker than the 120i.

The only thing going for the petrol is that it is quieter when you are idling than a diesel (which can be a little raucous in a vert). But then you need to thrash the 120i so hard to get anywhere that it is noisier than the diesel when on the move.

Looks like we will be ending up in a very similar situation: a 335 and a 120 sitting in our garage.

go for it if that's what she wants, in all honesty you can have just as much if not more driving enjoyment out of the 120 as the 335, in fact i like the chuck-ability of the 120 more than the 335.

sure straight line performance is not fast, but throw in some decent roads and dynamically it is up there...
