Keeping the heat.
I heard that it's possible to keep the heat going in a 1 series for 15 minutes after the car is shut off. Sounds like a great idea if it's really cold and you just need to run into a store for a few minutes. Is this true? If so, then how?

Big button on the right side of your controls. Residual heat. (Button says "RES" with diagrammatic heat waves.) See page 84 of your manual. It works.

Because the car uses a primary electric water pump rather than the former mechanical pump type, the car's computer keeps the pump going to cool the turbos and can even keep it going to pump coolant through the heater core to provide heat after the car is switched off. On the climate control panel, after the engine is off, push the 'REST' button before you exit the car. It will keep the car nice and toasty.
Great feature! |

It's true. You just press the Rest button in the middle of the passenger side temperature control. I've used it several times and it works well.
When I was in the mountains in VA over the holidays and it was pretty damn cold. There's no cell phone service at my parent's house, so if I had to make any calls I'd do it in the car before I left town. It was nice to be able to kill the engine and have a conversation without freezing. |

on my i-drive I have 2 timers to set for a 24-hour clock too.
I have 08 model. EspressoBoy PS If only one could bring heat into this for pre-heating the car in the mornings, then the freeze window issue would be history! |

Yeah, i've tried using those presets a few times but they don't seem to do anything. And you have to remember to set them everytime you leave the car.

Those presets are meant to vent the car and would only do something if it is hot out. For instance, if you get off of work everyday at 5 and have to park your car in the sun, you can set these timers to go off 15 minutes before you get to you car to vent out some of the hot air. The feature does work, though it definitely not AC. BTW, my wife loves the "Rest" button. She's always cold!

Is that iDrive only thing? I dont remember seeing that on mine. I do have Rest heat but no timers. Rolling down the windows before you get in the car is about as good as it gets.
