The Cayman S, well that is a whole different class of car so that comparison is kind of moot IMO.

Remember, this car will be starting at ~34-35 USD with the N54, 6-piston brakes, and a sport suspension. Aluminum is expensive to use so it makes sense that is got the ax.
Finally somebody gets it!!! If someone wants a car below 3,000lbs they should buy a Miata or Civic. This is a german car. Its gonna be heavy-ish, have a solid feel, and handle well.

Uhhh... Maybe you're right. Lord knows my MINI is no lightweight. But it is a little vault. We're still a long time from solid answers we can trust, but I'm going along for the ride.

I knew you'd come around. I'm a little dissapointed also but lets just wait and see.

Demanding crash test requirements, and the need for for increased technology and luxury have put an end to that. 3200 pounds is the new 2500, and that's likely to be about what the 1 series weighs in at. I'm sure the 1er has all sorts of weight saving construction features like plastic fenders a la the 3 series. Other subcompact cars like the Audi RS4 show up at just over 3900 pounds. And look at the 1 series tires, it wasnt so long ago that 245/35R18 would be more agressive than a Corvette tire. The E30 3 series sported 195/65R14s. Even the original M3 had 205/55R15s. Give BMW some credit, they understand the need to engineer cars to be as lightweight as possible better than any other mass market manufacturer out there. Suspension technology evolves and gets better over time and I'm sure a 1 series with the M-sport suspension will blow your mind. Its just short sighted to arbitrarily pick a number out of the air and say "its no good if it weighs more than 3000 pounds". I'm sure there's more than a few people in here that could stand to shed a few dozen pounds themselves, that'll make your car handle better too.

As far as Mercedes-Benz goes, they've been asleep at the wheel building boring and substandard crap for a long time. They have far too many models and have lost focus. Plus, try building a MB on their website. You have to add $15,000 in options to a C-class before you have a decent car. The only thing MB wants to do is build goofy looking impractical 2 seat wedges like the SLK. Mercedes-Benz thinks the answer to every sporting question ends by stuffing a 6.3L V8 under the hood. They desperately need a new perspective.
I must say Wolf, I do agree with you 100 percent in regards to the BMW's weight.(I never agree with you, whats going on here..hehe)

But I do disagree on the Mercedes part. Whether you see it or not, Mercedes does have one of the biggest prestige factor in the auto business. The only others on top of them is bentley, rolls, etc. To call they're designs boring is an understatement in my opinion. They make beautiful cars. A BMW's interior is nice but dosent hold a candle to a Mercedes. Look at the CLS!!! BMW is building something similar to compete. What I do applaud them for is offering an AMG in every model. Some AMG's are better than others but the E63 is seen to be better than the M5 by some. There really isnt nothing like a BMW and nothing like a Benz.

BMW's priority has always been making machines that is rewarding. Benz makes glamourous and they'll throw in a badass car every so often. Its about bragging rights too. Who else makes the worlds fastest production station wagon...lol (E63 AMG)

OK, that was a bit of a stretch ...

But I still find the coupe too sedanish. It would have looked a lot better if it had closely followed the proportions seen in the concept drawing in the 1addicts forum banner....

And what about those huge front lights!

It's only a small snippet of the original, but at least you get the lovely timbre of the engine/exhaust note in this one, and the aspect ratio is right. However the motion blur is awful and in conjunction with the small image size it makes it hard to assess the look of the coupe in motion.

i actually kind of like them, at least more than the e92 - there they just look too small. in all honesty though the sedan front fascia looks the most aggressive and the best out of all of them, IMO.

Nice job Bryan. Do we know where this video was shot?
Is Iceland a possibility? Sicily?

BMW is really getting a head start on the viral marketing. Could the 135i steal some of the M3's thunder?
