Man i just finished it and my whole body is pretty much in pain!

Ive put in probably 9-10 hours or so 4-5 hours being the first
intake hole

The first hour so 2nd guessing my self if the valve is fully closed or not
Coming from honda you turn the crank to play with the valves manually i couldnt apply that to the 1er since there more work to be done if i go that route.lol
I finally stop being paranoid and did the starter way and it worked like a charm!

The reason it took me hours on the first one was because i had not exp just yet! It had to follow how everyone does it from the DIY
So i probably walnut blasted that hole 5x and still alot of carbon build left. I decided to spray carb cleaner and viola! carbon build soften and the next walnut blast clean everything right of! I should have figure that out sooner but like i said no exp so i had to follow step by step!

2nd time around i applied what i learned from the first and i was able to cut the time and effort!
I did my own method this time instead of walnut blastingfrom the getgo i soak it with carb cleaner and break it down first
This is after the first walnut blast

I was able to cut the walnut blasting to just 2-3x

by the 3rd i felt like a pro at the point had the perfect rhythm going
I use a combination of tools

I use a siphone to suck excessive amount of the carb cleaner and carbon.
Seeing as its combustive i was scared of making the shop vacuum bomb!.haha

until i hit cylinder 6 and broke the tool!!

I got to comfortable with it lol next time would opt for the aluminum version.

After its all done my whole body was in pain muscle , joints everywhere!
This helped a bit ahah

But its totally worth it at then end knowing it will drive even better!

Wow, they came out really clean. Thanks for the tip on using chemical first to soften it up. How many pounds of Walnut did you buy/use?

How much did all the tools/kit cost for the walnut blast? I need to do mine. Debating having my shop do it again vs a DIY. Thanks.

Everything minus the air compressor i paid around 200$ since i bought most of the tools last black friday lol

My next update is why you should DIY if you are able to!

I dont know if its normal but i seem to develop an OCD attitude as of late.lmao
Its annoying but in this case i welcomed it

In my first initial post as you can see in the pics it already look clean but that wasnt the case.
Thanks to an OCD syndromes

I kept at it with the cleaning the valve guide hole and there is so much carbon left stuck overthere!
I use a combination of pick sets ( dont sleep on those liquidation stores they got some hidden useful tools for cheap)

All Good!!

with maintenance out the way time to mod

Decided to stop dicking around and put everything back.lol
Checked the oil filter housing gasket job i did last year. Its still good!

You know that saying " you learn something new everyday"
Welp i learned that the hood latch is perfect hook to hang a work light!

Being as this was my first time and this particular job when done wrong can be mighty costly.
I was scared to start the car up. Legit my heart was beating fast.haha

I was so relieved when it did start whewww!
But for a moment i thought i mess something up because it was louder than how i remembered it!
First thought came to mind was "oh no perhaps i blasted walnut in the combustion chamber :fuuuuu:
Then i realized that i havent put the valve plastic cover yet. lol
Yup like to some other cars the plastic cover is just that a plastic cover to make the bay nicer
But to the bmw it also dampens the sound of the engine to make it quieter because direction injection (loudness)
Overall experience i will rate it @ 7/10 in difficulty because first time
but just like with anything 2nd time around will a breeze :drunk:

with maintenance out the way its mod time!:victory:

Just looked at my N55 at 73k and they are no where near as bad as OPs N54.

However I plan on doing it around 100k, because while it's not that bad it is still a significant build up. Wish i snapped pics looking back at that...

This build just keeps getting better and better. Car looks great.

Thanks for the walnut blasting tips. I bought everything to do mine this weekend. I'll try the carb cleaner and post updates in my build thread.

If that was me even if its not that bad at 75k I would still do it im already halfway thru the labor!.
Plus for what i discover with carbc cleaner you can clean it out w/o the walnut as an alternative specially you said its that bad carb cleaner will definitely suffice.

Thanks man! For now i will stick with stock bumper i dont wanna keep adding stuff to do on my plate. haha I would like to enjoy it this summer and back again this winter

I would prefer in this order
*Revozsport raze GT retrofitted with half of the flare (easier to do since its frp PLUS its fresh and more agressive)
*Oem 1M rear bumper retrofitted with half of the flare (harder to do because its made of poly/plastic
* Rep 1m rear bumper (easiest to do since the 2nd piece of the flare will bolt right in )

Thanks man i a appreciate that
I believe that's one of the purpose of the forum is to share knowledge as i did with others!
I also got my inspiration of the splitter from you so thanks awell!

Looking forwards to it! the only hardest and nerve wracking part of the walnut is making sure the valves are closed

Nice!

How do you know for sure when the valve is completely closed? Any tips? I've never done anything like this before and don't want carb cleaner or walnuts getting in my motor! I am getting the remote starter so I don't have to turn the crank.
