I personally use cat urine, the ammonia really eats through the carbon, then I coat them in a little vaseline (petroleum jelly) to keep them protected.

Depends on how long the tips have not been cleaned.
Had to use a metal polish applied by a microfibre towel to get the gunk off. Now I just spray it with APC, leave to dwell, agitate/rub with a MF towel and rinse off.

Autosol or using some wheel cleaner(P21s gel) on the tips works well. Followed up by some stainless steel/wool "0000" or "000" type.

Does Autosol help seal and protect the metal as well? Or is it just a polish. I'd love to find a product that helps resist contaminants (like wheel wax does for wheels), even if it's a separate step.

I think its more of a polish. But afterwards I also use a "sealer" like Menzema after using Autosol and some steel wool("0000").

Fantastic. What Menzerna sealant do you use on metal?

I use Menzerna Power Lock Sealant on my car. I also use it on my exhaust tips and wheels. It seems to work fine.

Also in all seriousness ( disregard my above trolling) Flitz metal polish is what dinan sent me to clean my dinan exhaust, and it worked wonders..

Are we talking about the Performance exhaust or the stock exhaust with the black exhaust tips?
I've been religious with cleaning the exhaust tips since buying the car new. I've used only a wash mit and car wash soap. I've always been able to get the carbon and other junk off the tips. But recently, the black finish is starting to wear off. That's just with using car wash soap. I can't imagine what would happen if I used polishing compound. |

I used mothers metal polish. Worked well on my parent's 128i E88 with 20k miles on it and my 128i's pipes still look brand new!
