Tough question. I'm not really sure what cars will be available seven or eight years from now. If I had to decide right now though, I would probably only look at a Cayman (or maybe an M2).

oh i'm still DD'ing my 1M....in a more hardcore way than i would say anyone else around at the moment. the 'softer' family car is not for me...it's for the wife to drive when she goes to her parents house and for when we take additional family members with the baby arriving this summer (hard to fit other people with the rear facing infant seat in the 1er). It's not as a DD.

i'm not 'soft', man my kid is gonna be riding with me in the 1M. Center rear. No compromises. No minivans. No 'SUV parents' in this house.

I really don't get the point of SUVs. Offroaders yes, if they are used in the country. SUV's are really just lifted up minivans now.

me neither. it just became the standard...where people think it's the norm to get one. If i needed that kind of room, i'd be ok with a Touring/Wagon/Avant...but that's it. I think SUVs are also popular in the US so the fatties don't have to actually put in any work into getting in and out. lol! no bending of the knees required!!! just fall in and fall out!

I grew up in the backseat of MKII golf gti's and a mercedes 190e. It wasn't until I was a teenager when my parents got two SUVs. Climbing into the back of the 2 door GTi was always a lot of fun, come to think of it.
Even my little cousins love climbing into the back seat of my MKIV GTi and 1er.

Agreed.

Today's BMWs all seem to be rather bloated... And now the rest of the pack has caught up.

Not sure what I'd do next, but I'm hoping I have a few years before having to deal with that (the brand has almost entirely lost me, this funny-looking little beast is all that's left and I don't foresee anything on the horizon).
I'm similarly confused. I've been driving various 3 series loaners and they just suck. Long story short. Lots of things are better inside but the soul is not there. If wanted a Mercedes I would would buy a Mercedes. I thought 235i and I just read over in their forums someone who went from 135 to 235 and he regrets it. For me it only takes one to understand I would be in that category. He said "bouncy" and from driving the new 335i I know how that feels and I don't want a BMW boat.

Too bad these poor kids will all get automatic self driving cars when they become of age. It's sad to think about.

Feel the same. I noticed that Caymans are going for a $599 lease. That's better than a loaded 235i and it's a far better driver's car.

So a whole new class of vehicles are out and they are called "elevated sedans" that's what all these new stupid mini SUVs are being called now. Stuff like the X1, Evoque etc. Just disgusting.

as redundant as it would be, I would consider buying a 1M in a year or two to join my e82 and m3.

What to do when the automatic driving minivan hits your car? I can only imagine the lawsuit.
