Decent deal

Hi guys, just sold my 2008 335i sedan and plan on getting a CPO 2011 135 cv to replace it. Might go finalize tomorrow

Got one lined up for $34,000 out the door here in SoCal. Car has premium and sport, but not M-sport or convenience. Nav and heated seats. It is in excelent condition and has 26k miles. What I love about it is that is factory warranty unil Aug 2015, plus the 2 years CPO.

Question to you guys, is this a decent enough deal?

Thanks and safe travels!

Taking a WAG, I'm going to go towards good deal. <-nvm, read below

(moments later) KBB tells me for 92618 that a car like that should be $27.7k in excellent (private party, which is the price I always use no matter what situation. The car is always "actually" worth this on the market. If you're trying to make money buying/selling, then add/subtract markup, but as an individual that is not my concern). I'm assuming manual though; IIRC the DCT retailed for like $1k when new? Given that KBB often goes high, but also that this is CPO which many people argue is value-added, these two factors probably wash out, but for the sake of argument let's say the car should go for $27k flat, plus TTL.

I'm not 100% sure what that should be in Cali, other than its $$$ compared to my home (Texas). Assuming at least the state minimum 7.5% sales tax, which adds $2k, plus maybe $1k of other registration fees (if accurate at all, you'll need to adjust accordingly since I can't find a good fee schedule online), that puts you at my very roughly estimated $30k OTD.

So to me, assuming my estimates are at all accurate and that KBB isn't wildly inaccurate (which it sometimes is), it sounds like to me the price is $4k too high. Personally, that is because I do not put that much value in the car being "CPO" - I'd rather find a well-maintained private market car sometimes - but YMMV. If you see $4k worth of convenience and peace of mind in getting this particular CPO car, or if the car is particularly appealing for some reason (rare option combination, special color combo - something that shouldn't exist on our 1ers, etc.), then go for it.

Otherwise, what I recommend is that you keep shopping. From what I understand, SoCal is flooded with BMW's new and used. I recently read a post that several dealers in your area still have dozens of NEW 1ers, which ran out of production months ago. So 135's won't be hard to find.

Top tip: avoid lease turn ins when possible. Rule of thumb is that lessees (generally) take less care of the car (NYC after all), so long-term longevity *may* take a ding, particularly turbo motors. But if this isn't a long term car for you, forget what I said

Thanks TE. I think you are right, it just depends how much I value the peace of mind of the CPO.

Looking at the CPO numbers both on KBB (range between $31,200 and $32,500) and Edmunds TMV (retail $32,500, CPO $34,500) would suggest it's not a bad deal for a CPO around here, since taxes and fees are about 10%. Car itself would therefore be about $30,600.

Was tired last night and forgot to mention the car has DCT, nav and heated seats. Excellent condition private party value per KBB is $28,500 for the car in my zip, so I guess I'm paying about $2k for the CPO program, which for this car with the late in service date equals almost 4 years of peace of mind.

Whether that is worth it is the question I have to answer I guess. Thanks again for your input, always good to get a fresh perspective.

Seems high. You can search all the CPO's on BMWs site. These prices are before negotiation. http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte...lSearchRD.aspx

That price is what I paid for mine brand new in 2009 out the door with 0 miles. That seems high to me. But I could be wrong. I wouldn't go that high. I wouldn't go any higher than 25k. Granted mine had a few thousand less in options but still. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

Sounds high to me. My 2012 w/o nav and 10k mikes, M sport, HK premium, etc was the same price.

Used verts should be cheaper.

A vert in SoCal might be worth more than a coupe but $34k for an '11, even with CPO, seems a couple grand too high. Did you cross shop Autotrader, etc. to compare? Nav might get you a few hundred more, but not anywhere near what it lists for.

Regardless, if you're happy with the car and it's exactly what you want, go for it. Just make sure they give you two keys. The CPO is just a checklist and I went over mine pretty carefully and noted the missing key. I made them come up with another key or I'd be out a few hundred getting a new one.
