Drove the M-DCT M3 today.......

Had a test drive of the new M-DCT box in the M3 today.

VERY smooth and sweet. The change between gears is virtually undetectable. The only thing that disturbed me was the number of different options and settings for the thing!

Just pray it makes it into the 1er because I would change my car in a heartbeat!

I drove the 6-speed manual when it came out and have to say that it is just awesome! I love the sound of the V8! Very tight car with plenty of kick!

how were the downshifts? in the VW DSG they are not at all smooth unless you take the foot off the accelerator very deliberately for at least a split second.

So jealous. We have one sitting here at work in the Testing Centre taunting me every day. Going to have to do some serious arse-kissing to get a drive in it I think...

Very smooth, though I noticed the change down did not occur when you thought it might (in auto). Then again, the V8 has so much torque you could probably drive around in 4th all day!

Mate - just go to a BMW dealership and scam a test drive!

It's a possibility :biggrin:

On that subject, one of our M3's from the testing centre was 'borrowed' by a 'customer' for the standard 1 hour testdrive. 6 hours later they returned it with over €12000 damage. They'd taken it to a track and thrashed the shit out of it.

Needless to say the police were waiting for them and we sent them a bill for the damage. They'd managed to break the suspension and destroyed the tyres and brakes.

hahah.... ! That's cheeky!

Nice to hear the DCT is good. I drove the SMG M3 before I bought the 135 and it was terrible! I'll never understand why people ordered that car with SMG over manual.

The Auto is surely a nice box but $7k, nah hard to justify IMO. Perhaps an option when I get a bit older and lazy. Besides even my wife dislikes an auto!

By the way AMK the torque is the same and the M is heavier, there is the 84 killer wasps difference in power though.

135i = 400 Nm / 1,300 rpm
M3 = 400 Nm / 3,900 rpm

Valid point. I didn't get to really give the M3 the herbs but I reckon my SSTT 135i is quicker off the mark and more responsive.

The V8 does however make the grumble that translates to a rather nice vibration in your neather regions!! :biggrin:

I am in the market for an M3 but probably the sedan. I was very keen to see what the M-DCT was all about.

I don't think that one is for sale per se..in other words you can buy it but not take delivery for a few months(?) as they need a car there for a demo. I personally could not enter into such a relationship as when I want something I want it now....which is why waiting 5 months for the 135i damn near killed me !!!

Also..although I love the colour, I tend to prefer black interiors ( 3 kids - that should say it all )!

If you REALLY want to see what these M3s can do get into the BMW Advanced Driver Training II when it comes to Barbagallo next year. You get to hammer them (under professional guidance from instructors). The best I could do was 190kmh down the straight at Barbagallo!

Yeah I agree AMK. 135 with an SSTT should outgun the new M3. Then again I was in the M3 convertible DCT which has a bit of extra weight. I never thought I would say it but I came out of the M3 thinking ( I thought it would have been quicker ).

Having said that, I would have that NA V8 over our turbo 6 anyday of the week.

Exactly my sentiments...ie: hope it's featured on the 1er soon :smile:

Good to see more appreciation on 'the better' automated manuals coming to market, sounds like it shifts as sweetly as the revised DSG in the latest Audis...I should know about that one soon, as I have a test drive booked in with the new Audi TTS :smile:

This is one item I would really like in my next car, a good automated manual transmission...

And as for V8's for those who've never had em, nothing on Earth sounds better in terms of vehicle engines and with forced induction added to them, you'll never want to switch on your stereo, the sounds of the engine will be enough to keep you drooling all the time

I agree also. The handling and sheer dynamics of the new M3 is fantastic and the chassis is begging for another 200+HP:biggrin:

Not for me, turbo 6's rule surpreme over V8's. Name a V8 that gets as much torque down low, can rev as hard and get's good fuel economy.
I don't believe it exists does it?

Yeah I can't argue with you there but I just like NA ( Don't get me wrong I like turbo's also but not as much as NA).

All my dream Cars are NA ( F430, Lambo's ( all of them), GT Carrera etc..)..

There is just something about the way NA engines rev up and don't stop till the redline ( The good ones).. Most turbo cars invariable fall off boost at some point.. Let's exclude GTR's cause they seem to boost all the way to 8,000rpm..

You will probably think I am crazy but given a choice I would rather have the old E46 M3 engine in our 135 over the N54. That engine is a cracker!!!
